Several users have reported an issue in which photos taken with the iPhone’s built-in camera will not save to the device, vanishing immediately after they are taken.

The most successful fix for this issue we’ve seen thus far is as follows:

Restore your iPhone using iTunes, but do not restore custom settings data from the computer-stored backup after the restore process is complete. Do not set up as a new iPhone, and do not restore from backup — just disconnect the iPhone when prompted to make this choice. Note that you’ll temporarily lose text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc with this method,.

Try taking a photo — it should properly save to the device.

Connect your iPhone again, and in iTunes, restore your personal information from the backup when prompted.

We previously reported the early emergence of free wireless internet access for iPhone users at Starbucks and possibly other businesses that offer AT&T Wi-Fi services. In locations where access is available, a specially formatted for iPhone website allows you to enter your 10-digit wireless number to gain access.

The primary intent of this function: allow users to conserve battery life by turning push capabilities off for applications like Mail, which supports push for Exchange and Yahoo! Mail servers.

As we’ve noted before, push (which allows the iPhone to notify you of new mail as soon as it hits your inbox) or frequently checked email can slurp iPhone battery. Under current, public iPhone OS builds (including 1.1.4), users with psuh Yahoo! accounts can navigate to Settings > Mail then select the Yahoo! account and choose “Advanced” and select or deselect the “Use Push Mail” setting.

The new “Fetch New Data” preference in iPhone OS 2.0, 5a274d presumably controls push capabilities for both Exchange and Yahoo! Mail accounts, as well as future Apple or third-party applications that support push.

Interetingly, Telecom Italia also claims that it will be shipping the iPhone in Italy. This turn of events would represent a departure from Apple’s prior one-provider-per-country model.

Vodafone previously sought an injunction against T-Mobile, the iPhone’s official carrier in Germany, stating that future sales of mobile phones in Germany with “these kinds of restrictive SIM locks and tariff contracts goes against the interests of consumers.”

Representatives of Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, the firm behind a $100 million venture capital for official iPhone application development, told iPhone Atlas that its managers have been been overwhelmed by the response and subsequent slew of applications submitted for iFunding.

Since the program’s inception, KPCB has received more than 1500 applications. Due to the immense activity, KPCB says it’s currently missing the approximate two week deadline mentioned on their website. The delay is wrought in part by a meticulous review of all applications, the firm says. Each submission is reviewed by one of the firm’s partners before being accepted or denied.

We’ve already received a few notes from developers who have been rejected from the fund, but none from those who have been granted access to its coffers. One reader writes:

“Rejected, but politely.”

Before selling your iPhone on eBay, sending it to Apple, or otherwise sharing it, note the following: performing a “Restore” operation on the iPhone does not delete personal data from the device. In fact, mail, contacts, and various other data remain intact on the device after a restore, making the process unsuitable as a preparatory measure for iPhone resale or service.

Jonathan “NerveGas” Zdziarski, iPhone hacker and author of the “iPhone Open Application Development” and an iPhone Forensics Manual for Law Enforcement, has recently posted noted in his blog

“As part of my work on a forensics toolkit for the iPhone, I decided to push my test device to the limits and see whether user data could survive a full restore in iTunes. […] I first deleted any backups of my device and then forced the iPhone into recovery mode. From there, I performed a full restore of my iPhone, ensuring that no backups or syncing was performed. I then performed a basic recovery of the raw disk using the forensic toolkit I put together, and analyzed it. What I discovered was that deleted mail, contacts, and pretty much all of my other personal information was still residing in unallocated space on the device. My personal information safe and sound, and available to anyone with the right skills to recover it.”

“What does this mean? This means that when you do a restore through iTunes, it is only the equivalent of performing a ‘Quick Format’ on your iPhone. All of the personal information that was sitting on the device prior to the restore is still accessible in the unallocated blocks of the iPhone’s NAND memory. To make matters worse, the restore process is likely to restore the original operating system files over the same location as the old ones, meaning very little data is likely to be corrupted at all. Let this be a caution to everyone who sells used iPhones on eBay (or elsewhere) - you are selling your personal data with it.”

We aren’t aware of any clean sweep process that is capable of deleting personal data on the iPhone. Your best bet is to manually delete such data before performing a restore and reselling or servicing the device. Private data stored on the NAND will still be viewable by prying eyes, however.

Various reports indicate the emergence of free wireless internet access for iPhone users at Starbucks and possibly other businesses that offer AT&T Wi-Fi services. In locations where access is available, a specially formatted for iPhone website allows you to enter your 10-digit wireless number to gain access. It’s not clear whether access is limited to as short as two hours or unlimited. In testing in the Houston Bay Area, we’ve not be able to find an access point supporting this new service.

A call to AT&T resulted in a statement of “no comment” at this time. Starbucks and AT&T previously announced free Wi-Fi on February 11, 2008. With Apple’s self-imposed June deadline for a public iPhone OS 2.0 release looming, hackers are working hard to ensure that tools for unlocking (allowing it to operate with non-sanctioned wireless carriers) and jailbreaking (allowing full read/write filesystem access and installation of unofficial third-party applications) the device remain intact after the OS upgrade is released.

Now the author of the most popular unlock/jailbreak tool for Mac OS X and Windows, “Zibri,” has vowed that his “ZiPhone” utility will work to unlock and jailbreak iPhones running OS 2.0 despite enhanced security measures developed by Apple.

Zibri writes:

“Firmware 2.0 will require a new iTunes version and a new “mobiledevice” framework. If it were for me I would not even bother to hack this version but I know many of you are going to upgrade so I will release a new ziphone version after the official release. I already patched activation (lockdownd) and unlock / Fake IMEI (baseband firmware).”

Some pre-release editions of iPhone OS 2.0 can already be unlocked and jailbroken with the use of Pwnage, a tool exploits a low-level vulnerability in the iPhone’s boot process to allow the installation of custom OS files. This has allowed users to install pre-release versions of the iPhone OS, such as OS 2.0, which normally require expressed authorization and a special signature from Apple.
