Where’s my iPhone’s number?

Posted 9 September 2008 @ 9am in Troubleshooting

Several iPhone 3G users have reported an issue in which their own numbers are not displayed on the devices. Generally, the subscriber’s own number is displayed at the top of the contacts list (above the search function). The simple answer to this issue: the number was never properly saved to the iPhone’s SIM card.

This problem can be solved in one of three ways:

  • Insert the SIM card in another phone (such as a Motorola RAZR) that allows you to manipulate SIM card contacts directly and enter your number.
  • Call AT&T customer support at 1-800-331-0500, explain the issue, and ask them to send you an over-the-air SIM update with your number.
  • Go to an AT&T store and ask them to program your SIM card appropriately.

Oddly enough it shows in the contacts portion of the phone app, but not in the contacts app on iPhone 2.x.

On my 1st gen iPhone, “My Number” shows up just fine when you access the Contacts from the Phone app. But it does not appear when you access Contacts app directly.

Your phone number shows in the Contacts viewed in the Phone App. Launch Phone App, click on Contacts and your number is there. It is not in the Contacts App, and I’m not sure it’s meant to be. Entering your mobile number in your own Contact sheet doesn’t add it there either.

I called AT&T customer support at 1-800-331-0500, and asked them to update my SIM and add my phone #. I was looking for my # in the Contacts APP. The ATT guy sent it and it still did not show up. He said to look in the “Settings” and “Phone” and it was there. I also found it in the Phone “Contacts” at the top.

Just call AT&T and have them send the over the air update. You turn your phone off then on again, takes 5 minutes and you’re done. I had to do this as well.
