Built-in Nike+ feature not for the iPhone?

Posted 9 September 2008 @ 12pm in News

During today’s “Let’s Rock” Event in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs demonstrated built-in Nike+ capabilities for the iPod touch running iPhone OS 2.1 (due this week for the iPhone and already on Apple’s servers for the iPod touch). However, it appears that this update may only be available for the iPod touch and not for the iPhone running OS 2.1.

The Nike + iPod Sport Kit page on the Apple Store lists only the second-generation iPod touch and iPod nano, making no mention of the iPhone. There is also no mention of the iPhone on Apple’s Nike+ iPod compatibility page.

Makes sense as Steve seemed to imply that it required the receiver to be available for it, either built into the new touch or available for the nano as an attachment.

The 1st generation iPod Touch, even after upgrading to the new 2.1 firmware, still complains about a non supported accessory when plugging-in the Nike+ receiver to the iPod Touch… Too bad! :-(

I’ve been waiting to find out about this for sure. Id be really bummed if they don’t find a way to get this on the iPhone… seems foolish. I have the sport kit for my nano, but was really excited about the ability to track my runs w/ GPS.
