iPhone OS 2.0.1 released: what’s fixed, problems applying

Apple has released iPhone OS 2.0.1 for the first-generation iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod touch. The new release resolves several performance-related issues and bugs found in OS 2.0, though you wouldn’t know it from Apple’s paltry release notes, which state only that the update includes “bug fixes.”
Among the improvements we’ve noted so far:
- Better keyboard responsiveness
- Less lag in the Contacts application
- Faster backups
You can obtain OS 2.0.1 by connecting your iPhone to a host computer, launching iTunes, and clicking the “Update” button in the device pane. Alternatively, you can manually download the update via the following links:
The iPod touch update must be download via the iTunes “Update” button because it is a protected asset.
If you used one of the aforementioned manual downloads, hold the option key under Mac OS X or the Shift key under Windows while clicking the “Restore” button in Windows, then select the downloaded file.
Problems applying the update If you received an error -19 or a different message that prevents the update from taking place, try turning off automatic syncing, then quit iTunes and disconnect your phone. Launch iTunes again, wait for it to find your phone, and try the update again.

I just updated…and although I haven’t had too much time with it so far, I have noticed no slowdowns in the contacts app or anywhere else where I had previously noted them…I updated my wife’s first-gen iPhone, and the improvements appear to be there as well….hopefully it’s not wishful thinking…I’ll report back if there are problems!
Any word on GPS functionality improvements? Less buggy?

so does this work find with pwnage? I have to have my first gen iphone jailbroken AND unlocked so hopefully pwnage will still do all this with version 2.01

The Google app finds contacts that the Contacts app is unable to find. This was not the case in 2.0. For example, I have multiple contacts for “Jane Doe” (same person, but I keep separate data due to requirements of other applications). But Contacts only finds one of them, whereas the Google app finds both.
Still no wifi access on my original iPhone, which was lost with the 2.0 update.
No noticeable speed improvements when backing up, at least not so far. Not that it has been all that bad as of late. 10 to 15 minutes has been the norm. The real test will come when I’m in a situation where I have to restore, where backup restores often get locked up and have to be restarted. I spent 12 hours yesterday restoring my phone.
And speaking of backups, I backed up at least 10 times today, but am only seeing backups in iTunes from today, 2 days ago, and three days ago. What’s with that? If it’s taking me that long to back up, why aren’t the backups being saved?

If you have difficulties applying the update from iTunes, try unplugging all USB devices except the iPhone USB, keyboard and mouse. Then reboot the computer (may need to reset the iPhone as well), then try again. All should work well. For whatever reason, the iPhone updates collide with USB devices and fail (usually with an unknown error 6).

My first gen seems to be *incredibly* more responsive at the keyboard, but the camera seems to still take eons to launch. A good 5 - 6 seconds…
The update went very quickly and I didn’t have to restore data as I did when upgrading to 2.0. Was this different? It went very quickly…

Silly question.
I’m on vacation and don’t have the computer that my iPhone is sync’d with. Can I update to 2.0.1 on the computer here or will I lose all of my music, etc. until I resync on my home computer?

You lose everything when you restore the new OS-
A reminder for those new to the update is if you download the stand alone files listed here - in order to use then you connect your iPhone to the computer, decline the update through iTunes and hold the OPTION key down- then click the RESTORE button. You will now be able to manually select the .ipsw file and restore.

Syncing my phone this morning with 2.0.1. Been at it 10 minutes and the progress bar has moved about 1/4 of an inch during the backup. Is Apple hoping that we want these issues fixed so badly that we will somehow convince ourselves that things have indeed improved? :)
In fairness, I started syncing this morning and had to interrupt it to take a call before attempting the sync a second time. But still. At this rate, chances are good that I’ll receive another call prior to the backup completing, which will mean starting over yet again. This could go on all day!
I hope Apple gets this down soon. These are phones. When we’re syncing and restoring all day long, they are effectively out of service.

Just updated a Gen-1 phone. The update did NOT do a full restore — just the firmware. Apps and media appear untouched. The whole process took about 15 minutes, including software download.

Argh! After watching my iPhone backup for 7.5 hours, a call came in just prior to what I assume would have been another 30 minutes spent finishing the backup. So after a full day, I still have no complete backup since installing iPhone 2.0.1.
So…tonight I’m going start a sync before I go to bed. Maybe it will even be done by morning. From here on in, I’ll sync at night and charge the phone during the day with my wall adapter. This is just too frustrating. Hopefully, my phone won’t require yet another restore before then.

I’ve lost my caps lock (double tap on the shift key) after applying 2.0.1. Anybody else experience this?

You sure you don’t mean double tapping the caps key? And if that still doesn’t work, check in Settings. Caps lock is a preference setting. Maybe something to re-set.

I see two version updates again here. I know that some people applied the 3G version of 2.0 to the first gen iPhone. Has anyone tried applying the 2.0.1 3G version to the original iphone? Any differences?
I may try it to see for myself.

I didn’t have the buletooth problems until I installed this latest 2.0.1 update. I am now also have issues placing calls. Full bar connectivity on the meter, and just wont connect to the provider. Seems more like a downgrade to me.

I would not apply the 3G version to the original iphone - I speak from experience here after applying the 3G version of 2.0 to my original iPhone and encountered some very bizarre problems until I restored with the proper versoin.
