iPhone OS 2.0 released — how to install; AppStore goes live
Posted 10 July 2008 @ 9am in News
Apple has released the iPhone OS 2.0 update for first-generation iPhones. Once the new software/firmware is installed, these devices can access the AppStore.
In order to apply the iPhone OS 2.0 update, download and install iTunes 7.7, then click the “Update” button.
Note that this update will erase all data on your iPhone or iPod Touch, per this Knowledge Base article:
“Normally if you choose to update, the iPhone or iPod touch software is updated but your settings and media are not affected. If your device currently has a software version prior to 2.0 (1.x) and you are updating to software version 2.0 or later, all data on your device will be erased in order to perform install the new software. In this case, iTunes will offer to create a one-time media backup of your device depending on what content is on your device and what content is stored in the iTunes Library you are connected to. You should ensure that you have enough free space on your Mac or PC to accommodate a backup that matches the capacity of your iPhone or iPod touch (4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB, or 32 GB) if you proceed with the this backup.”
You can also use the following direct link to download iPhone OS 2.0 (currently only for the iPhone, not the iPod touch):
iPhone OS 2.0 software [225MB]
If you use the standalone download, after downloading the update, you can hold the option key on a Mac or Shift key on a Windows system, then click the “Restore” button in iTunes (under the iPhone tab) and select the file to apply it.
To apply the update using iTunes, simply connect your iPhone then click the “Update” or “Restore” button.

Just FYI…to get iTunes 7.7 you can only download through that link… you cannot update it through itunes itself…at least as of right now…also it appears you can only get 2.0 through the download link as well as iTunes says the iPhone is fully up to date with 1.1.4.
Is this correct because it seems as if it maybe wasn’t officially released yet?

I’m hitting Check For Update in iTunes 7.7 and it’s saying 1.1.4 is the latest. Bummer.

Not true… I’m on OS X and got the iTunes 7.7 update already via Software Update. It was available for OS X but appears to have been taken down.

I downloaded the 2.0 from the link, but it will not install. I tried the option check for updates and can open the folders, but can’t select anything to begin the update :-(

I think they might have accidently released it early and then pulled the plug on it quickly?

I was able to download iTunes 7.7 earlier this morning…..but am still seeing no sign of the iPhone 2.0 update. As with those posting above, I am getting notice that 1.1.4 is current and up to date.
Sounds as if someone took off early from the gate and the horses now have to go back for a new starters gun.

Please read the entire article. I downloaded that ‘iPhone OS 2.0 software [225MB]‘ file
and followed the directions. It works perfectly fine. You will however need to resync anything
you had on it.

if you downloaded the 2.0 restore file (ipsw) just hold down option when you click restore and it will let you select a file, pick the 2.0 file and let it restore. just a warning, make a backup first as you will lose all data on your device!

It seems that the version I picked up was just after they disabled it and just before they hid it from download.
Anyone have a copy of the file they want to share?

Nevermind. Just don’t unzip the file. Change the name to end in ipsw rather than ipsw.zip and you’re all set!

Just an FYI - Apple has NOT released 2.0 for the iPhone. The software is available on the Apple servers, but it has not been officially released. You can not download it and update your iPhone through the iTunes store which is the official way it will be released within the next several hours. If you do download it and run into trouble, well you’ve been forewarned.

Ahhh, the update killed my iPhone! After is updated my phone it needed to access the itunes store. it attempts to connect for several min until I get an error back saying “We could not complete your iTunes Store request. an unknown error occurred (-4).” Now my phone is dead, I cannot access the functions on the phone and can only make emergency calls!

Well, at 1730 UTC my copy of iTunes 7.7 offered to update my iPhone to 2.x automatically.
It seemed to go OK until it finished rebooting itself when it showed the “plug the phone’s USB into iTunes” icon. So I plugged it in to my Mac — and all I get is a message that it’s connecting to the Apple Store and that there’s a problem with the Store. It hints that I should try again later. Funnily enough, the store works fine to download music and apps today — but it is the UK store rather than the Yankie one (and I’ve had no end of hassle because they’re not the same).
I now have a dead iPhone — but I can slide the slider on the screen in order to make emergency calls — but, it seems, only to 911 NOT to the UK’s 999 or 112 numbers: so even that doesn’t work.
Advice: DON’T DO IT. DON’T UPDATE YOUR PHONE - EVEN IF iTUNES SUGGESTS IT.

I have 7.7 iTunes try to do the download it looked as if it had done so however iphone will not show in itunes so you can not do restore or update. It tries(phone) to go to the apple store for some reason. Then i get an error message (-4) I do not see any of the info such as version iphone or option I have trie to reset the phone that does not good. My old Ipod works on the system just fine however if I plug the iphone in it just does nothing. I have a blank page and it says it is going to apple store. Any help would be great.
