AT&T “doubling” 3G network for iPhone 3G

AT&T today announced that it has started “doubling the capacity” of its 3G markets, stating that nearly half of all cell sites will receive additional 3G capacity by the end of the year.
The company claims that its 3G mobile broadband network is currently available in nearly 300 major U.S. metropolitan areas, with “plans to expand to nearly 350 by the end of the year.”
The map below shows AT&T’s current 3G network (in blue). While coverage does indeed cover most major metropolitan areas, large swaths of the country and many states are completely excluded from coverage where EDGE access is plentiful. In the image below, blue represents 3G coverage, while bright orange represents EDGE coverage, and lighter orange represents partner coverage.

This map is for 3G “TALK” not 3G “DATA” which covers most of the country. Got to the ATnT website and search for 3G coverage

Uh, sorry Wollie, 3G Data looks just the same as 3G talk, except, the non-3G coverage is in a slightly lighter blue making it look like huge areas of 3g coverage at first glance. Check again.

Even with the 3G “Data” the coverage still sucks- the blue on the talk reflects EDGE coverage, and true 3G data still eludes the majority of the markets.

I don’t believe there is a difference. This is indeed the 3G coverage map, and most of the US is NOT covered. The data coverage map you’re looking at includes EDGE network coverage which does cover most of the country, but is significantly slower.

I don’t understand the hubbub surrounding the “lack” of 3G coverage. The large swaths of the country that aren’t included are also where the fewest people live. Those 300 metro areas represent the vast majority of the American population; I can see why AT&T wouldn’t make it a priority to shell out the cost of expanding to that incredible cell phone market in Montana.

The above map is correct for 3G Data coverage in the US for AT&T.
When you zoom in on the AT&T Data Coverage map the 3G coverage can be seen.
The 3G coverge is very metro. Most areas do not have 3G coverage and most metro areas are not linked up to another metro area for continuous metro to metro 3G market coverage.

On the data map the 3G coverage is the dark blue area, which is the same as 3G area on the voice map. The lighter blue is EDGE which is not 3G…
