iPhone gaming: a preview

Posted 17 June 2008 @ 12pm in News

Apple’s history with gaming is best left unmentioned. One of the company’s first memorable forays was the Pippin, a “multimedia platform” introduced in the mid-1990’s that saw little development and was discontinued soon after its release. The Mac platform, meanwhile, has long played second fiddle to a booming Windows gaming market despite repeated attempts to [...]

Adobe Flash running on iPhone emulator; too slow for real devices?

Posted 17 June 2008 @ 10am in News

Last week we noted two observations that, however speculative, were indicative of Adobe Flash running on the iPhone 3G. Now it appears that, whether or not those indicators were red herrings, the iPhone does — at least on a software level — have the capability to run Flash content.

Adobe’s CEO said during a conference call [...]

Old iPhone docks will not fit the iPhone 3G

Posted 16 June 2008 @ 11am in News

The dock included with the first-generation iPhone will not fit the iPhone 3G, forcing upgraders to purchase a new dock if they wish to utilize one. According to an Apple employee, “the iPhone 3G is shaped differently and doesn’t fit in the same dock.”

It is as of yet unclear whether or not the Apple Universal [...]

First-generation iPhones still fetching high prices

Posted 16 June 2008 @ 11am in News

Despite the imminent release of the iPhone 3G, first-generation iPhone models are still commanding high prices on eBay and other resale venues, indicating concern over the ability to unlock and/or jailbreak the upcoming model combined with significant demand in countries where the iPhone 3G will not initially be on sale, including Russia and China.

A cursory [...]

T-Mobile to sell iPhone 3G for 1 Euro in Germany — with a hefty rate plan

Posted 16 June 2008 @ 9am in News

When Steve Jobs said during his WWDC keynote that $199 and $299 would be the maximum prices for the iPhone 3G worldwide, he wasn’t kidding. As we speculated, cheaper iPhones with higher subsidies from other wireless carriers are now making their debut. The T-Mobile Web site currently states that the iPhone will be sold for [...]

AT&T: no iPhone 3G tethering for you!

Posted 13 June 2008 @ 11am in News

With the iPhone 3G’s significantly faster data transfer rates and ability to perform voice and data functions simultaneously, potential buyers have become intoxicated with the idea of tethering the device: using it as a cellular modem for laptops — a service AT&T and other carriers offer for many other portable phones. iPhone Atlas has learned, [...]

Apple muscling out other iPhone GPS app developers

Posted 13 June 2008 @ 7am in News

The iPhone 3G’s GPS capabilities are among the device’s most hotly anticipated. Steve Jobs’ brief demonstration of Google Maps’ GPS-powered turn-by-turn directions and live tracking drew cheers from the WWDC keynote audience, and several developers have announced applications that take advantage of the new, more accurate location services. TomTom, a maker of global automotive GPS [...]

iPhone developers for hire

Posted 12 June 2008 @ 4pm in Development

Prior to Apple’s announcement of an iPhone SDK and AppStore, the only major developer hiring iPhone engineers was Apple. In fact, the company looked to the then nascent unofficial development community, hiring Lucas Newman, who worked on the first native iPhone game, Lights Off and helped develop iPhone Atlas develop our initial 5-step native application [...]

Buying an iPhone 3G online and non-activation penalties

Posted 12 June 2008 @ 1pm in News

Monday we reported that all new iPhones would have to be purchased and activated either at AT&T or Apple retail locations, eschewing the current iTunes activation strategy pioneered for the first generation iPhone that allowed customers to buy online.

However, in a recent interview with Reuters, AT&T representatives implied that this might not be the case. [...]

Did Steve Jobs demo a Flash-enabled iPhone 3G?

Posted 12 June 2008 @ 10am in News

Yesterday we pointed out an image on Apple’s Web site that is indicative of an iPhone 3G displaying Adobe Flash content, but may have simply been a case of the company’s graphic design team cropping a Desktop browser image to fit the device’s screen. We’ve now discovered another bit of evidence that, albeit similarly speculative, [...]
