Camera photos won’t save to iPhone: fix

Posted 9 May 2008 @ 9am in Troubleshooting

Several users have reported an issue in which photos taken with the iPhone’s built-in camera will not save to the device, vanishing immediately after they are taken.

The most successful fix for this issue we’ve seen thus far is as follows:

Restore your iPhone using iTunes, but do not restore custom settings data from the computer-stored backup after the restore process is complete. Do not set up as a new iPhone, and do not restore from backup — just disconnect the iPhone when prompted to make this choice. Note that you’ll temporarily lose text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, etc with this method,.

Try taking a photo — it should properly save to the device.

Connect your iPhone again, and in iTunes, restore your personal information from the backup when prompted.

Or you can ssh into your iPhone and issue a command.
Navigate to var/mobile/Media and issue this command.
chown -R mobile DCIM

No need for restoring or backups or anything.

I have another problem with my iphone camera. It saves the pictures I make, but as soon as I connect my iphone to my PC, Windows XP does not recognize my iphone but tries to add new hardware for a digital camera and ultimately my Windows XP crashes every time. The only solution I have found so far is to delete all the pictures from the iphone, before connecting it to the PC. I would appreciate if any of you who read this message provide any suggestion towards what should I do to fix this problem.

Within mere hours of reading this posting, my iPhone camera stopped working as described in the article for the FIRST TIME EVER! I was disappointed, but I thought the article was very serendipitous. I hadn’t had a chance to try the fix described until this morning. I did it, and it worked perfectly! I didn’t lose any data at all after reconnecting and syncing (it did take like 30 minutes to get all my music and videos back on the iPhone, of course). Didn’t lose one iota of data as far as I can see…and the camera works again, of course.

My phone started this over 2 weeks ago, had it sent to apple even though it was fine when restored, but they did nothing for it. Prom was last Saturday and I missed out on all those photogenic memories, and now I’m just down right tired of this. So I tried the process described, it worked, but not after I synced my music back.. HELP!
