iPhone software 1.1.4 released: update precautions and troubleshooting

Apple has released iPhone firmware/software 1.1.4, which is now available via iTunes or as a 165 MB standalone download.
If you use the standalone download, after downloading the update, you can hold the option key on a Mac or Shift key on a Windows system, then click the “Update” button in iTunes (under the iPhone tab) and select the file to apply it.
To apply the update using iTunes, simply connect your iPhone then click the “Update” or “Restore” button.
Release notes state only that this version includes “bug fixes.”
If you make use of unofficial third-party iPhone applications and would like their presence on your phone to persist, refrain from updating to iPhone software/firmware 1.1.4. Updating will erase any jailbreak and disable access to unofficial third-party applications.
Backup before applying Backup your iPhone by syncing it in iTunes before applying this update. You may be forced into restoring the device if the update fails.
Problems installing Some users are experiencing problems applying the 1.1.4 update — especially those with jailbroken iPhones. If the update fails, you may be forced to restore the iPhone (as aforementioned). If you are experiencing similar issues, the first thing to try is simply multiple attempts. The iPhone may fail to update on the first attempt, but succeed in restoring on the second or third attempt.
Failing that, your copy of the update may be corrupt. Try deleting an re-downloading it. Either use the standalone download link and instructions above, or navigate to on of the following directories:
- ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates under Mac OS X
- C:/documents and settings/[yourusername]/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates under Windows XP
- C:/users/[yourusername]/AppData/Roaming/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates under Windows Vista
and delete the 1.1.4 update — named iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw or similar and re-attempt the update/restore.
The fix in other cases is to reinstall iTunes 7.6.1. Simply download the package, run the installer and restart.
Failing that, try deleting the following files:
- /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext
- /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
- /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework
- /Library/Receipts/AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg
then reinstall iTunes 7.6.
Another potential fix is to put the iPhone in recovery mode then restore it.
There are several other workarounds for failure to apply updates, including connecting the iPhone directly to a computer’s USB port rather than through a USB hub; and switching USB ports if you’re having problems with one. See this article for more.

It’s possible one of the ‘fixes’ pertains to the long-standing “missing sent mail” bug. After installing the update, my phone rebooted, activated, and seemed normal. I started digging through the settings (I’d just gotten to the main settings menu) when I heard the “mail sent” sound. I looked through the Sent box of each of my accounts but saw no recent entries I didn’t recognize. The last time I sent e-mail from my iPhone was weeks and weeks ago (I usually just read). God knows who just got what … :-D

I thought this would be a quick update, but sadly, no. I got my iPhone on day 1 and this is the first update to fail. It seemed to be installing normally, but then iTunes reported a generic error and told me my phone was in recovery mode and needed to be restored. (The iPhone was showing the ‘Plug Me Into iTunes’ screen.)
Restoring worked, but now I have to sit through 8GBs of music syncing and anything that wasn’t in the last backup (which thankfully was from just before the update) was lost. This includes some pics I took but hadn’t bothered to download with iPhoto yet.
I’ve never jailbroken or hacked my phone in anyway, so either the update is less than ready for primetime or fate was just toying with me today.

I am having a heckuva time since updating. This may sound stupid, and forgive me if so. But when I tried to update, the iphone hung up on the “Plug Me Into iTunes” screen; when I rebooted my machine and booted iTunes, the update seemed to go through. BUT now my iphone’s NAME has changed from “alison’s iphone” to “iphone” and craps out during my music sync (I now have 81 of 780 songs–not much, i gran tyou, but it still is frustrating). Should I redo the update? The only backup I have is the “iphone” one–my others are gone. Should I go back to the previous version of iTunes? I’m trying so hard not to go into a primal scream here.
And I have never changed anything on my phone, like Gerrit1 said. No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

Oh, and to clarify…I have restored twice, to no avail. I have all my music in iTunes, but not on the phone.
(Sorry–I’m in the 14th hour of this nightmare, and I’m a little flustered)
