What iPhone SDK applications do you want?
Posted 22 February 2008 @ 2pm in Applications, Development
We don’t often conduct user surveys here on iPhone Atlas, but with Apple still apparently planning to “have an SDK in developers’ hands in February,” and February rapidly coming to a close, we’ll bluntly ask: what third-party applications would you most like to see materialize after the advent of the software development kit?
A number of developers of unofficial third-party applications have told us that they’re planning to leap into the Apple-sanctioned realm post-SDK, but there are undoubtedly those who are waiting to see a distribution framework and other specifics before investing in the platform.
So, what’s your iPhone application concept? Let us know at info@iphoneatlas.com.

I’d love to see camera controls added to the iphone that would make it more like a standard digital cam.
Features like zoom IN/OUT, F-stop control, ability to shot in low light and night time conditions. And, if Apple is listening… burn and dodge controls would be a nice addition to iPhoto editing.

Living in Miami and dealing with hurricane associated cell phone outages it would be nice if we could have program that could convert the iphone into a land line phone so that the phone, email and internet could be accessed.

The ability to play a music track by speaking its name. Like voicedialing for iPod tracks. Would be great in the car, or on the ski slopes.

Copy and paste. Absolutely essential for bloggers and totally mind-boggling that it wasn’t included by Mac to begin with.

I’d love to see an application that allows text, voice mail, and email reminders like PhoneButler or Phone Alarm for the other platforms. I use my phone as a page but when I don’t hear the first text mssg beep, I’m out of luck. My old BlackJack sucked but at least it did reminders so I would never miss a page.

vnc. The current one for jailbroken iPhones works really well.
–Remote access to your desktop iTunes. Something like dottunes, but more elegant, with playlists, etc.
–quicktime streaming for playing radio stations (and video). iRadio and MobileScobler are good starts, but this should be built in to the iPhone. This would totally crush satellite radio.
–any video capture, however rudimentary.
–video chat
And so much more.

My “wish list” has been articulated in other people’s blogs, but for emphasis let me reiterate:
- A “search” function in contacts, notes, and a desired tasks function.
- “Categories” or sub-folders in contacts for Windows Outlook users. Fifteen to twenty categories should suffice.
- A “task” list connected to the calendar and ability to assign priority levels.
- Ability to clear all emails with one tap rather than each email.
- Ability to clear the trash can with one tap rather than individual items.
I am not happy with the display of the contact name in the selection list. In some cases it is necessary to go to the surname and then open the whole record to see if it is the individual or company I want. I would like to see any combination of name, company, or title.
All the above have been around since the introduction of the Palm Treo. Apple has taken a step backwards it seems. One more time Jobs is allowing substance to follow form.

Stop me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the features described above features that Apple itself should include, SDK or not? These aren’t applications you’re all describing, but extra capabilities of the iPhone itself.

I would like to see my Windows XP recognize my iPhone as an external drive, and then be able to drag and drop files, songs, ringtones, pictures, etc., instead of using iTunes which doesn’t like what I want it to do.

I agree with MarkDavidMcCoskey we need to be able to use it as external hard drive. But one cool app I think would be a Drwing app taking advantage of the touch screen and you could zoom in to draw in details and maybe even have a paint function, and the ability to attatch these drawings to e-mail or sms would be awesome.

1. 3D Volume Rendering and Visualization of medical datasets: iPhone will be a device which, at the moment’s notice (a few clicks), will be able to render and provide real-time interactivity for viewing, diagnosing patient ct, xray, biopsy scan results for doctors on the go. I suggest porting the the present Osirix software to the iPhone and iPod. The internal graphics hardware should allow fast 3D texturing capability through OpenGL, Quartz.
2. Language Transliterator: A real-time language transliterator which converts my english text input into equivalent Unicode characters of the language specified. Using this I can type and send emails, contact names and other information in any language like Japanese, Indic (ex. Telugu), Hebrew etc.
3. Native CRM applications: For salespeople on the field, to access customer information, use the excellent native applications provided by Apple (calendar, alarms, email) for their benefit.

Right now the iPhone is nice, but not killer. To become something I can really use, it needs:
1.) IM client, especially Yahoo and AOL/AIM.
2) Support for Windows streaming audio from radio station Web sites. I work in radio hell and can’t pick up my favorite AM stations over the air, and streaming audio is not allowed on my work network. Being able to surf via Safari to the streams of my favorite stations and listen on the iPhone would make it truly a device that meets all my mobile communications needs.
3.) Modem scripts so I can tether to my MacBook (or Windows laptop) and dial into AT&T/Cingular via connection by cable or Bluetooth and use the iPhone’s EDGE service to connect my laptop to the Internet. I can currently do this with a Motorola cell phone and my MEdiaNet service, using some third-party modem drivers installed on my MacBook.

Forgot to add … filtering abilities in Mail so all the spam that’s so nicely filtered by my ISP (and goes to a spam folder when I run Eudora) doesn’t show up in the middle of my real mail, and I have to wade through dozens of spam messages everytime I download mail from the server on the iPhone.

I would like to be able to show video out of any and ALL application via the video out cable, more push-email connectivity, full USB Hard Drive, Keyboard, Printer support, as well as full Bluetooth profiles for A2DP, Keyboard, Printers, etc.
Syncing To-Dos, Notes, and Exchange would be a big help for businesses, as well as viewing .ppt files.
There are many others, but this would be a good start…

I love the emulation games on the thing, but no game with that screen will ever really be good. So I want some smart person to make a USB adapter that plugs into the bottom and lets a small USB gamepad be used to play Mame and NES games.
I really want flash video sites to just work, too.

Video playlists; cut and paste; ability to print to a bluetooth or wireless printer directly from the iPhone; Flash video; 3G wireless; ability to use any MP3/MP4 as a ringtone; video capture. Those would make me a very happy boy. By the way, Meebo works fine for me as an instant messaging app.
