Problems with 1.1.3 jailbreak: try the new version and other fixes
Posted 31 January 2008 @ 12pm in Troubleshooting
Earlier this week, the iPhone dev team released an automatic, graphical method for upgrading jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhones/iPod Touches to jailbroken 1.1.3 device without any host computer interaction. If you have any firmware version other than 1.1.2, or a non-jailbroken device with any other firmware, you need to follow our complete guide then replace the last step with the automatic jailbreak.
Several users are having significant problems with jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhones. We’ve outlined some of these problems and corresponding fixes (if available) below, but many of the issues can be resolved by using the new version of the Dev Team’s automatic jailbreak, named “Official 1.1.3 upgrader 1.1.3-2″ in Installer.app. Try applying the new version and see if it alleviates these issues (you may need to start the jailbreak process over from the beginning).
Also note that the original 1.1.3 jailbreak released by “Nate True” exhibits issues that are fixed in the Dev Team’s 1.1.3 jailbreak.
- “Main Script Error” when attempting to install apps through Installer.app Make sure that Installer.app is updated to the latest version before applying the jailbreak.
- Ringtones broken Download “Ringtone Fix” from Installer.app.
- Inability to use the Google “Locate Me” function Try installing Navizon through Installer.app, running it once, then attempting the Google “Locate Me” function again. Or install “Locate Me” from Installer.app
- Broken EDGE connectivity Tap Settings, Tap General, Tap Reset, Tap Reset Network Settings. This will cause your iPhone to restart, and will delete any stored Wi-Fi passwords as well as DNS settings and more. It may, however, restore your ability to pair with and use Bluetooth devices. If this fails, try resetting all settings.
- OpenSSH broken Uninstall then reinstall this application and the BSD Subsystem via Installer.app.
- Some third-party applications not working Some applications have not yet been updated to work with firmware/software 1.1.3. These include “Customize” and “SummerBoard.”
There are also a number of issues with non-jailbroken phones updated to software/firmware 1.1.3 that may be conflated with jailbreak problems.

I just wanna say that I have tried every jailbreak, from NateTrue as well as the DevTeam and so far the only one with REAL succuess has been NateTrues Mac jailbreak, I have everything working, including AT&T and maps.app, all I had to do was replace the lockdownd file, and install the mail password fix. Using his method Customize as well as all my other most used 3rd party apps work perfectly, while the DevTeams jailbreaks would get me to a 1.1.3 with installer and AT&T (with the over installer soft update) none of the third party apps worked, customize worked but didn’t actually change anything, mobile chat and apollo started but never could connect, ssh kept refusing connections, and service was bad, plus for some reason my red end call button didn’t show up. So I am sticking with NateTrue’s method and when the Nikita official app problem comes up I’m sure better methods or even a fix will be here.

For what it’s worth, I’ve used the DevTeam’s methods on two iPhones, and the only problem I’ve encountered was the “Main Script Error” error — which I was able to remedy by using BossTool to move my Applications store to make more room. (I had to reload my custom ringtones, but that was simple enough.)

If you had upgraded to 1.1.3 for any reason, when you downgrade, you’ll get that “incorrect sim” message and the phone function will not work, becaue the SIM card has been altered in the process of the upgrade. Once you upgrade to 1.1.3, that error message will disappear, and everything should work properly.

Registration9 … you’re wrong. And not only that, OpenSSH does not show up in the Installer list, even after loading Community Sources.
Bummed I messed up my perfectly working 1.1.1 phone for a locked one. Oh well.

This article is somewhat misleading.
It’s written that
“Also note that the original 1.1.3 jailbreak released by “Nate True” exhibits issues that are fixed in the Dev Team’s 1.1.3 jailbreak.”
This is immediately followed by five issues in bold, including the “Locate Me” feature. From what i know, even the Dev Team’s 1.1.3 jailbreak method does not remove the requirement to run either Navizon or the LocateMe app in order to temporarily get google map’s Locate Me to work.

Firstly Thanks to the Dev. Team any all others involved for all your continued efforts. Im happy to say that my jailbreak to my 1.1.3 (upgraded from an OTB 1.1.1)had been successful in phone functionality and every other application that goes along with the official 1.1.3 Apple upgrade even ‘locate me’ in google maps. However; alot of the third party apps are not showing up on my applications list and the ones that are listed dont work properly. Themes are limited to only 5 that load, some games, sketch, and a handful of others that you would probably not be inclined to installing anyhow. Any suggestions on how to attain all of the apps from the installer? Again I appreciate very much all the efforts that have gone into the process of making third party available. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks Again

I have unlocked (IPSF) iPhone ver, 1.1.1. I dont understand why Dev. Team released so called Official 1.1.3 Upgrader only to be used to upgrade ver.1.1.2 and not a similar ” Official Upgrader” pakage to upgrade from ver. 1.1.1 to 1.1.3 ???? can some one explain, please.

Your mileage may vary, but that “incorrect sim” warning happened to me on two occasions with two different phones (actually, on more than two occasions, since I eneded up having to do the process two or three times on each phone to get it to work!), and I only learned about it because it was mentioned at one of the sorces for the directions I followed. I’ve now successfully performed the process on two phones, and everything works.
There may be other explanations for the error message in this context, of course — but that’s how I encountered it, how it was explained, and it went away after I upgraded to 1.1.3.
(And I had no trouble finding OpenSSH. BSD Subsystem was missing on one of the tries, for some reason, but it all worked out on the next try.)

Here’s a quick rundown of my latest iphone escapades and the resultant successes and overwhelming failures:
Had a 1.1.1 jailbroken iphone with approx 50 native apps installed via Installer and decided to upgraded to jailbroken 1.1.3 with the soft upgrade from the dev team in Installer (at that point it was v1.1.3-1 I believe). Well this failed miserably (left my phone with the “connect to itunes” symbol) leaving me with no option but to restore and upgrade through itunes to non-jailbroken 1.1.3. No problems there, but I missed my apps, so I spent about two days repeatedly trying to downgrade to 1.1.1, then 1.1.2, and finally a hacked 1.1.3 (kept getting stuck at the windows.bat program screen when jailbreaking 1.1.2; was told over and over that it couldn’t find my iphone despite it being plugged in as always). Finally completely deleted and then redownloaded 1.1.2-jailbreak package, extracted the entire folder from .zip, and voila! windows.bat found my iphone and I had jailbroken 1.1.2. Yesterday used ijailbreak v1.1.3-3 via Installer to give me what appeared to be a perfectly functional jailbroken 1.1.3 iphone. Downloaded some apps which worked great, added some sources for apps that weren’t on the list (http://patrickmccarron.com/irepo for iBlackjack for instance), the google “gps” was near-perfect in locating me (without having to use Navizon or Locate Me apps), mail was working well, wireless connection was steady, and I had 5 bars of service. Even made a few phone calls without issue. But then came trouble…
I’ve encountered two killer issues and I have no idea what’s causing them or what to do to remedy them:
1. Music will NOT play on/from my iphone. Songs transfer fine, album art is intact and synced, but when I press “play” nothing happens. It appears as though the song is playing, but it stays at “0:00″ and no sound comes out. I hit “pause” and it pauses (although having never started there’s nothing to really pause) and then tapping “play” again still does nothing. This is the case for all songs, both connected to itunes and not, with airplane mode on and off, after numerous restarts, etc. I thought maybe it was the “manually manage music” that was caused a problem with the song transfers from itunes, so I deleted all music off the phone and did a sync instead. Still the same issue. Since there were about 900 songs I thought maybe I’d overloaded the iphone (?), but even with only 1 album on the phone it still won’t play.
This seems to be a problem with all “play” related functions as well. That is, youtube will not play videos even with a 3-bar wireless connection, visual voicemail won’t play messages (I can’t even check my greeting), and, worst of all…
2. I cannot make or receive phone calls, even with 5 bars of signal strength. I should rephrase that: I can make calls (although it’s sporadic, as many/most don’t connect or go through), and I can receive (see incoming) calls, but no sound is transmitted in either direction (those I call cannot hear me, and I can’t hear anything from callers). Also, about 60% of the calls I make or answer automatically activate the “speaker” function on the phone (although no sound comes out). I can turn the speaker off fine, but I cannot turn it back on during the call (lights up but won’t stay on). So calls out: most don’t go through, the speaker usually activates for no reason, and the ones that do go through result in me not hearing anything and the person I call not hearing me, even with perfect service. Incoming calls: I can answer fine, the speaker typically shows “on,” there is no sound from the caller, and the caller cannot hear me.
I don’t know if others have encountered similar issues with regular or jailbroken 1.1.3, but they’re both crippling and I’m out of apparent fixes. I think a restore is in order (again! grrrr!) but I really don’t want to if it’s at all avoidable. Any suggestions would be borderline life-saving.
As an aside to readers: if you have a jailbroken v1.1.1 or 1.1.2 iphone CHERISH IT! I strongly suggest that you NOT upgrade until these kinks get worked out. I would give a few toes to have my good old 1.1.1 hacked phone back with all its reliably working apps and features, so please take that into consideration before you cross the line into what seems to still be treacherous territory with 1.1.3. Good luck and, again, thanks for ANY help you can provide!

I finally took the plunge and upgraded my 1.1.2 jailbroken iPhone to 1.1.3 via the computerless, soft-update Dev Team method, and it worked great. The only issue I’ve experienced is the “locate me” feature not working, and that can be fixed by just running Navizon once per reboot. I also had the no-sound problem described above when I first jailbroke my phone and upgraded to 1.1.2, but I solved that problem by restoring and ugrading to a legit locked 1.1.3, and then downgrading to 1.1.1 and repeating the jailbreak process. Hope this helps!

I tried the Dev Team jailbreak upgrade from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 (v 3 of the upgrade) yesterday and it did not work. In fact, after going through it’s download, and several other phases of the “upgrade” it got stuck at 17% writing the user info back to the phone or something like that. I was watching it during the whole process and had “prep’ed” the iphone by attaching power and turning off the screen lock. I had to restore/upgrade my phone 1.1.3 in the end, so no native apps now.
I’ve been through the process a couple times with previous version upgrades of the jailbreak phone. I really like having the additional app capability, but I may just wait until the guys at NullRiver create an installer app that Apple approves of.

OK, let me amend what I said earlier; YouTube didn’t work on my jailbroken phone. The fix was simple, though: I added “http://i.unlock.no” as a source in Installer.app, and went to the “Unlocking Tools” category, and installed the YouTube fix. Upon reboot, it works fine now.
