Guide: How to use the 1.1.3 jailbreak on any iPhone (Mac/Windows)
Posted 27 January 2008 @ 5pm in Guides/How-Tos
We’ve compiled a complete instruction set for turning any iPhone revision (except for those with software/firmware 1.1.3 out of the box) into a jailbroken iPhone running software/firmware 1.1.3. The process is lengthy and requires some dexterity. When you’re done, you will have a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone that retains the capability to use Apple’s official application signing mechanism (“Nikita”) and does not use any copyrighted code.
Before beginning this guide, make sure you are within range of a usable Wi-Fi network and connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC.
- If you’re on a standard (non-jailbroken) 1.1.3 iPhone, start with step 2.
- If you’re on a standard (non-jailbroken) 1.1.2 iPhone, start with step 1.
- If you’re on a standard (non-jailbroken) 1.1.1 iPhone, start with step 1.
- If you’re on a jailbroken iPhone running software 1.1.1, start with step 7.
- If you’re on a jailbroken iPhone running software 1.1.2, start with step 8.
If you have problems with the jailbreak, see this article.
Step 1: Update your iPhone software/firmware 1.1.3
If your iPhone is already running software/firmware 1.1.3, there’s nothing to do here.
If not, launch iTunes, select your iPhone from the left-hand pane and press the “Update” button. This will download the 1.1.3 update and install it your iPhone.
Step 2: Download iPhone software/firmware 1.1.1
Click this link to download iPhone software/firmware 1.1.1: iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw
Make sure that your system doesn’t automatically decompress this file after downloading it. If you’re on a Mac using Safari, go to the “Preferences,” click “General,” then uncheck “Open Safe files after downloading.”)
Step 3: Put your iPhone in recovery mode Hold down the sleep/wake and home buttons simultaneously until the iPhone screen goes black, then after about 2 seconds, release the sleep/wake button but continue holding the home button. The intended result is that your iPhone screen remains black, and iTunes delivers a message stating that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. If that doesn’t happen, you need to try again.
If your iPhone’s screen turns back on and you see cable pointing to an iTunes logo, your iPhone is not in the correct mode. You will need to click the “Restore” button in iTunes and re-apply the iPhone 1.1.3 update, then try this step again.
Step 4: Downgrade your iPhone to software/firmware 1.1.1
- With your iPhone’s screen black and iTunes displaying a message that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, click the “OK” button to close the error message dialog box.
- If you’re on a Mac, hold the “Option” key and click the “Restore” button, then select the file you downloaded in step 2.
- If you’re on a PC, hold down the “Shift” key and click the “Restore” button, then select the file you downloaded in step 2.
- This will apply the old firmware. At the end of the process you’ll receive an error message (either 1013 or 1015) stating that the iPhone could not be restored. This is normal. Click the “OK” button.
- Now, apply the 1.1.1 firmware/software again. Hold the “Option” key on a Mac or “Shift” key on a PC and click “Restore,” and again select the file you downloaded in step 2.
- If you immediately get an error message “1″ when attempting to apply firmware 1.1.1, your iPhone is in the wrong mode. Go back to step 3.
Step 5: Kick your iPhone out of recovery mode
If you are on a Mac, download iNdependence, and launch it. Wait a minute or so, and your iPhone will be pulled out of recovery mode.
If you are on a PC, download iBrickr and launch it. Wait a minute or so, and your iPhone will be pulled out of recovery mode.
[Once your iPhone is out of recovery mode, your iPhone will display the "Activate iPhone" screen with a message stating "Incorrect SIM." Quit iNdependence or iBrickr.]
Step 6: Bypass activation and jailbreak 1.1.1
Your iPhone, even if it is locked to AT&T’s network, will not be able to activate through iTunes at this point. Instead, you need to temporarily bypass activation. This is the trickiest part of the process. Follow these steps:
- Slide the “slide for emergency” slider
- Enter *#307# and press “Call.” Your iPhone will start to ring.
- The screen should quickly show the dialer again, and you will be able to edit the numbers. Tap the “X” button to delete all the characters (*#307#) and enter “0″ then tap “Call” again.
- Tap “Answer”
- Tap “Hold”
- Tap “Decline”
- You should now see the iPhone’s normal dialer.
- Tap “Contacts” at the bottom of the screen.
- Add a new contact and name it whatever you want.
- Tap “Add new URL,” and enter prefs: (that’s the word prefs with a colon after it). Save the URL.
- Tap “Add new URL” again and enter http://jailbreakme.com. Save the URL.
- Save the contact.
- Now tap the URL “prefs:” that you just created. This will launch the iPhone’s Settings application.
- Now tap “General,” then “Auto-Lock” and change the setting to “Never”
- Scroll up and tap “Wi-Fi.” Select your network and enter a password if necessary.
- Press the iPhone’s home button. You will be back at the “Activate” screen.
- Slide the emergency slider and tap “0″ then tap Call.
- Tap Answer.
- Tap Hold.
- Tap Decline.
- You will now be back at the Contacts screen.
- Tap the contact you created before, and this time tap the http://jailbreakme.com URL. This will launch Safari and access the jailbreakme page.
- Tap “Install AppSnapp” on that page. You will be return to the “Activate” screen. Do not touch anything at this point — wait until your iPhone automatically restarts.
- You will see the “Activate” screen again. At this point, you can slide your iPhone to unlock it and see the normal home screen. You can now access all of your iPhone functions except for the phone.
[If any part of this step fails, turn your iPhone off by holding the sleep/wake button until the power off slider appears and sliding it, then turn the iPhone back on and try again.]
Step 7: Upgrade to jailbroken 1.1.2
- On your iPhone launch “Installer” from the home screen. Allow the application to update, then re-launch it.
- In Installer, tap the “Install” button at the bottom of the screen, then select the category “Tweaks 1.1.1″
- Select the package “OktoPrep” and tap the “Install” button. After it installs, you should see a message stating that you are ready to upgrade to 1.1.2.
- Download the iPhone 1.1.2 jailbreak package on your Mac or PC and the iPhone 1.1.2 firmware package.
- Launch iTunes if it isn’t already open. You may need to restore your iPhone from backup. If you see the message “A new iPhone software version (1.1.3) is available,” click the “Don’t Install” button.
- Select your iPhone from the left-hand pane (it may be named “untitled playlist”)
- If you’re on a Mac, hold the “Option” key and click the “Update” button (not “Restore”), then select the file iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw you just downloaded.
- If you’re on a PC, hold down the “Shift” key and click the “Update” button (not “Restore”), then select the file iPhone1,1_1.1.2_3B48b_Restore.ipsw you just downloaded.
- Once the update process is done, you will again see the Error 1015 or 1013 message, and your iPhone will be in recovery mode.
- Launch iNdependence (on a Mac) or iBrickr (on a PC) again, and wait for your phone to be kicked out of recovery mode. You will again see an activation screen (a bit different from the previous one).
- Quit iNdependence or iBrickr.
- Quit iTunes
- Open the 1.1.2-jailbreak folder you downloaded earlier in this step on your Mac or PC.
- If you’re on a Mac, launch jailbreak.jar inside the 1.1.2-jailbreak folder (make sure you have the latest version of Java installed).
- If you’re on a PC, launch windows.bat inside the 1.1.2-jailbreak folder.
- Click the “Jailbreak!” button. This process will take a few minutes.
- Your iPhone should restart normally and go to the “Slide to Unlock” screen. If it does not, again launch iNdependence (on a Mac) or iBrickr (on a PC) to kick the iPhone out of recovery mode again. It may restart twice, and then should take you back to the “Slide to Unlock” screen.
Step 8: Update to jailbroken 1.1.3
[UPDATE: There is now a file available through Installer.app that automates the below procedure. Try it first, but return to these steps if the automatic method is not successful]
- On your iPhone, tap “Settings.” Go to “General,” tap “Auto-Lock” and make sure it is set to “Never.”
- Press the home button to go back to the home screen and launch Installer.
- Tap the “System” category, then install both “BSD Subsystem” and “OpenSSH”
- Press the home button to go back to the home screen.
- Tap “Settings” then “WiFi,” then press the small blue arrow next to the the WiFi network to which you are connected. Take note of your iPhone’s IP address.
- On your Mac or PC, download the 1.1.3 jailbreak package and expand it (it will be a folder when it’s expanded)
If you’re on a Mac, launch the Terminal, located in /Applications/Utilities, then do the following:
- Type cd then a space.
- Drag the folder “Jailbreak-1.1.3″ you just downloaded onto the Terminal window and press return. Your command should look like this: cd /Users/username/Downloads/Jailbreak-1.1.3
- Press return
- Type scp -r ./* root@YOURIPHONEIPADDRESS:/ (where YOURIPHONEIPADDRESS is your iPhone’s IP address)
- You should now have a command that looks like this: scp -r ./* root@10.0.1.2:/
- When asked if you are sure you want to continue, type yes and press return again.
- When prompted for the password, type alpine and press return. The files will transfer to your iPhone.
- Now type ssh root@YOURIPHONEIPADDRESS and press return
- When prompted for the password, again enter alpine and press return.
- You will now be SSH’d into the iPhone.
- Type cd ../../ and press return.
- Type sh install.sh and press return.
- Allow the process to take place (it takes quite a while — up to 15 minutes). When it’s done and your device reboots (it may also take several minutes to boot, and reboot several times), you will have a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone.
If you’re on a PC, download and launch WinSCP then do the following
- Establish a new connection using WinSCP. Enter your iPhone’s IP address for the “Host name” (user: root and password: alpine); use the file protocol SCP.
- Navigate to the root directory of your iPhone (/) and transfer all of the files in the folder Jailbreak-1.1.3 from your PC to this directory.
- Download and install Putty.
- In Putty, type ssh root@YOURIPHONEIPADDRESS and press return.
[If your connection is interrupted or you get another error and your iPhone refuses to boot put your iPhone in recovery mode and start again with step 3. Or, if you want to give up on jailbreaking, put your iPhone in recovery mode and just hit the "Restore" button (without holding shift of option) in iTunes to bring your iPhone back to a normal 1.1.3 state. Make sure to quit iNdependence or iBrickr before doing this.]

If you use this method, will the Google locator work with just WiFi or also cellular signals?

I have a 1.0.2 phone, jailbroken and unlocked. I have been sitting out the updates, but this one is tantalising. I find the amount of information around overwhelming. Will I still be able to unlock if I upgrade to the 1.1.3 firmware?

This isn’t the best way but you cant just type rm ~/.ssh/known_hosts to purge the file. Or you can open it up and remove the offending entry.

I followed the instructions to the T, did it four times, and every time..I ended up with a jailbroken 1.1.3, with no phone functionality. I also tried downgrading to 1.1.1, restoring twice with that same firmware, jailbreaking, then updating to 1.1.2 and jailbreaking, then using iBrickr 113 special. Same end result: 1.1.3 jailbroken, no phone functionality.
My iPhone was a 1.1.2 OTB, I upgraded to 1.1.3, stupidly.

Mac rumors has the solution to reactivation
25. Download the following file, and place it on your Desktop:
* Original /usr/libexec/lockdownd file
26. On your iPhone, go to Installer.app and install the “BSD Subsystem” and “OpenSSH” packages if they are not already installed.
27. Open up your iPhone settings and join your wireless network. Once you have joined, click the blue arrow next to your network and write down your IP Address.
28. If you are a Mac OS X user…
1. On a Mac connected to the same wireless network, open up Terminal and type in the following commands:
* “chmod +x ~/Desktop/lockdownd”
* “scp ~/Desktop/lockdownd root@:/usr/libexec” where is the IP Address of your iPhone (minus the curved brackets) that you just wrote down. When it asks for a password, type in “alpine” and press Enter (nothing will appear as your type in the password - this is normal).
o Note: If your computer complains about something having to do with a known_hosts file (you’ll see “@ WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! @”), run the command “rm ~/.ssh/known_hosts” and try the ’scp’ line again.
29. If you are a Windows user…
1. You must be on a PC connected to the same wireless network as your iPhone. Download this file and save it to your Desktop (if you haven’t already):
* PCSP for Windows (by the maker of PuTTY)
2. Now open a command window by going to your Start menu, clicking Run, and typing in ‘cmd’.
3. Type the following commands:
* “cd desktop”
* “pscp lockdownd root@:/usr/libexec” where is the IP Address of your iPhone (minus the curved brackets) that you just wrote down. When it asks for a password, type in “alpine” and press Enter.
o Note: These steps are not yet tested for Windows. If after restarting your phone you still do not have cellular access, please post in the forum thread and the guide will be revised.
30. Restart your iPhone by holding down the top Sleep/Wake button and sliding the red slider. When the phone restarts, you should have a 1.1.3 iPhone that is jailbroken and with your cellular service working.

I also upgraded to 1.1.3. stupidly, with firmware 04.03.13_g. I am running on the o2 carrier. I have managed to get back to 1.1.1. Jailbroke but with no sim support. If I use the new 1.1.3 jailbreak from a freshly restored iphone (sim working) and still want to use my o2 genuine sim, will it work or will I be blocked ? Thanks Jimmy.

I upgraded a jailbroken 1.1.2, using StealthSIM to make the phone work, which had lots of 3rd party apps, to 1.1.3, I now have a 1.1.3 iPhone. This is confirmed by the About pane in settings and attatching it to iTunes. The iPhone is working fine but nearly all the 3rd party apps have disappeared from the screen. If I run Installer the Apps do not show in the Install function but do show in the Uninstall function. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling them but only Locate Me, Squid and iSim have reappeared. OpenSSH, Customize, SysInfo all gone! SummerBoot won’t uninstall as it says Script error. Help, how do I get my Apps back?

Does this one work if you’re running iTunes 7.6? All of the other Jailbreak posts I’ve seen mention that downgrading from 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 with iTunes 7.6 doesn’t work.

I now have a 1.1.3 phone locked that is locked and shows 187.9 MB worth of data stored on the phone under other. There are no emails, photos or mp3 stored on the phone at this point. When I try to down grade to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, I get an invalid SIM. How do I go about deleting the 187 MB of who knows what that has been written to the phone?

I have the same problems with installer and installed 3rd party apps as cubit (quote below) and javier.

I upgraded my jailbroken 1.1.2 (unlocked) flawlessly with the above instructions. My AT&T sim from my native iPhone worked with the jailbroken phone without difficulty. I was able to play iTunes store previews and youtube works as well.
Of interest, the locate me feature on Google Maps didn’t work with the AT&T sim (just kept spinning), but when I put an inactive T-Mobile SIM in, it found me right away and very accurately.
Thanks for the update — love it!

Ok, this is is a result of a bad installer.app being bundled with your jailbreak download. This is how I fixed it:

Started with a 1.1.2 jailbroken iPhone, that was jailbroken using instructions on this site.
Only had trouble with the 1.1.3 upgrade shown here because I *didn’t* follow the directions! I thought I’d be smart and use iPhoneBrowser to copy the upgrade files to the iPhone, instead of using the WinSCP program the instructions direct. Well, iPhoneBrowser seems to have converted the install.sh to DOS format or something. When I executed it, it did nothing but display errors.
Once I did as directed, and used WinSCP to transfer the upgrade files, the upgrade worked immediately and flawlessly. Thanks everybody for excellent instructions and software. I’ll respect your precise instructions better from now on!

I have attempted this process 3 times now, downgrading from an Unjailbroken 1.1.3, then back to jailbroken 1.1.3. I have sucessfully gotten to 1.1.3 and jailbroken it, but the phone part of the iPhone no longer works. So I am back to an unjailbroken 1.1.3. 3 hours wasted time so far. :( sadly I may try again, because, no third party apps bites.

This note fixes the Installer problems:
Installer Crashes to Springboard : ( Symptom can also be Apps Not displaying on Springboard after install )
Add this source:
sleepers.net/iphonerepo Uninstall all 3rd party apps, then from Utilities add bossTools 034.
Use BossTools to move the Application folder to the media Partition. You know this has worked when
a. It takes about 30 seconds to perform the move
b. The Button that said “Move Applications” now says “Apps Already Moved”
NOTE: if you are confident with Commands, you can create the symlink yourslef to move the application folder, use this guide:

Thanks guys. It worked like a charm after applying new installer.app.
One more question. Earlier I was able to copy my custom .m4r ringtones files to /media/ringtones folder. Now when I copy those I get spaces error although I can see that I still have around 5.4 GB left. What could be the problem here?
BTW, I have remove natetrue’s version of 1.1.3, downgraded it to 1.1.1 –> jailbreak 1.1.1 –> 1.1.2 and finally used this option to successfully upgrade to 1.1.3.

That’s the lockdownd problem- most likely.
You’ll need to find a “clean” lockdownd file, upload it to /usr/libexec and chmod +x on it and reboot.
You should probably google around for some directions because if you don’t do it right, you’ll end up needing to restore and start all over.

This should be solved by replacing your lockdownd. See my comment above to amande1.

Well I just completed the steps here and it worked out just fine. Just a couple of issues I ran into. Number one, READ the directions over and over again. I made the mistake of hitting the restore, vise the update button for the 1.1.2 update and had to start over.
Something that should be added to the the instructions should be to replace your lockdownd with a clean on as the last step. This alows iTunes to re-activate your phone with AT&T. After doing this my phone works just fine.
There was just one oddity that I ran into after haveing the phone up and running. I transferd my pictures back to the phone, but none of the thumbs show up. The pictures work in every other way, just no thumbs in the camera roll

Could someone be more specific with the steps required to fix the installer and “lost 3rd party apps” that some of us are experiencing after the 1.1.3 jailbreak on the iphone?
I see notes from cupit and timhoppa, but I am not sure I understand exactly what to do - I’ve learned the hard way not to screw up the steps.
Thanks in advance for the help

icedoc13:
I’m not much of a command line guy, so I did this with with a combo of GUI tools and command line.
You should probably close Installer.app on the iPhone.
I was on my mac, so, I used Cyberduck. If you have a Windows machine, a program called WinSCP should do the trick.
Download the file on my previous post (the updated Installer.app). Unzip it. There is a file called Installer. (On windows, the extension might not be hidden, so it probably will say “Installer.app”) Drag this file into the /Applications/ folder. It should warn you about an overwrite (Installer.app is already there, remember?)
You can do this entirely command-line. All the commands are in the original post, but you’d have to make the appropriate changes.
Then, I switched to the command line because I didn’t know how to chmod properly on the GUI tools. Follow the instructions in the original post to ssh into your iPhone (on mac ’ssh root@YOURIPHONEIPADDRESS’ The password is alpine by default; on windows, download PuTTy, launch it and enter the same command.)
You should have a command prompt (#)
type ‘chmod 4755 /Applications/Installer.app/Installer’
It returns to a command prompt without any type of confirmation.
I restarted my phone at this point, and viola, it worked.

So will this work on my OOB 1.1.2 upgraded to 1.1.3 with bootloader 4.6?

Hi,
I have an UK 1.1.2 OOB iPhone with O2 carrier, it is unlocked to the O2 prepay service. Yesterday I read this feed and I decided to try out maybe I will manage to make the phone functionality working with the 1.1.3 firmware. I managed without any problem to get until where I had to update to 1.1.2. There I got a message that the upgrade was successful and I haven’t got the 1015 or 1016 error. But the phone is not activated. I tried to run the jailbreak1.1.2 and I got an error message that it cannot make the connection with the iphone and to try to unplug the phone and plug it back. I tried it many times with the same results. Can anyone help me with that? Thanks.

Does it work for 1.1.3 OTB?

Thanks for this. After weeks of trying, and with some expense at the hands of lesser able technos I very nearly made this all the way through, but fell at the final hurdle (well it is 2am). Got as far as step8 but can’t work out how to transfer the 1.1.3 jailbreak files into the root directory in WINSCP- drop & drag doesnt work, nor copy, nor cut & paste. I’m sure its very simple and I’m just dozy- any advice?

To answer a few questions:
I started with a 1.1.3 OOTB iPhone, and followed this guide to the letter. Everything worked perfectly. Then I followed the steps in this guide -http://guides.macrumors.com/Jailbreaking_and_updating_to_1.1.3 - for restoring phone service and applying a backup. Then I connected to iTunes, applied the backup when it prompted me, then synced the phone.
I now have a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone with all new 1.1.3 functionality working (including the Google Maps Locate Me feature using cell towers). All of my contacts, text messages, pictures, etc were restored when I applied the backup.
sisgb: To transfer the files with WinSCP, locate the files on your local machine in the left pane, and go up to the root directory in the right pane. Then just drag the files from the left pane to the right pane, and follow the prompts to copy.

As an addition to the above, I also have to follow the instructions to update the Installer application manually, as the old version would crash back to the home screen when started.

i have downgraded from 1.1.3 to jailbroken 1.1.2 and meticulously followed the step-by-step process. everything had worked seemlessly up until step 8. From the home screen i proceeded to go into the installer app and downloaded both BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH, no trouble there until i downloaded 1.1.3 jailbreak package. Instead of being able to expand it, it is not downloading properly because it isn’t able to find the software so i may later be able to expand it. I am so close to this thing and i have been here for 3 hours like many of you im sure haha. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know by e-mailing me at drum_passion@yahoo.com of simply reply back to the post. Thanks so much. - eli
Step 8: Update to jailbroken 1.1.3
Press the home button to go back to the home screen and launch Installer.
Tap the “System” category, then install both “BSD Subsystem” and “OpenSSH”
Press the home button to go back to the home screen.
Tap “Settings” then “WiFi,” then press the small blue arrow next to the the WiFi network to which you are connected. Take note of your iPhone’s IP address.
On your Mac or PC, download the 1.1.3 jailbreak package and expand it (it will be a folder when it’s expanded)

Hello!
First of all thank you for your great work. I’ve been successful with past Jailbreaks and enjoyed them immensely. I’m on my second iPhone, the first having been replaced because of an issue with the camera, and this iPhone came with firmware version 1.1.2 out of the box. I am technology familiar, but not a programer or pro-coder by any means - but have not had problems with the past Jailbreaks either.
I was able to complete the process for the current Jailbreak on my 1.1.3 firmware phone all the way to the last step. It even appeared that the last step was completing successfully, with the terminal commands executing correctly. However, my phone never rebooted and is now stuck with the Apple logo in the center of the screen. I’ve attempted to reset the phone, plug it in to my computer and my wife’s and friend’s computer to see if I can do a restore (it isn’t recognized), tried using INdependence to bring it out of whatever mode it seems stuck in - all to no avail. I also tried to run through the last step of the Jailbreak - step 8 - but can’t get through the terminal commands because I am asked for an SSH password other than the alpine password referenced to in the post. I’ve tried every password I can think of and none seem to satisfy my machine. I’ve googled and dug through my help on SSH, but I’m afraid I’m just not networking wise enough to figure this one out. I have also read something about restoring my phone using terminal and my restore files (~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backups/ I think….), but again, I just keep getting asked for the SSH password.
I am feeling pretty worried and disappointed that I was unable to complete the Jailbreak. If you could offer any assistance I would be so grateful. I love the functionality that Jailbreak has provided in the past, but would, at this point, would be so relieved to have my phone just functioning again. Thank you so much in advance for your help!!
Sincerely,
Richard Cummins

I had this happen (stuck at Apple logo) one time. It was a bad lockdownd transfer (I think I forgot to chmod it). The only option is to force it into recovery mode (press sleep and home until the phone turns off, when it turns back on, release sleep- keep holding home) and start over. Sorry.
If you can ssh in, maybe you can just replace the lockdownd (I’m still assuming that’s your issue). I don’t know how you can do that, given your difficulties.

I’ve got an issue because I don’t fall under any above category: My iPhone has been jailbroken for the last five months (1.1.1 then 1.1.2 and 1.1.3); however, while on a business trip I haven’t read the fine print and upgraded to 1.1.3 using Nat True method. I’ve got 1.1.3 jailbroken for a number of days (find me doesn’t work, neither do custom ringtones saved using Erica’s SendSong utility). I’d like to switch to official dev team jailbreak but it errors out as don’t have 1.1.2.
I’ve got a number of 3rd party apps and would apprecaiate any help if there is a way to switch/upgrade to official jailbreak without downgrading to 1.1.1, wiping all of the stuff I already have and starting all over again.
Thanks,

I have gone through the steps and have had no problems. I got down to the second half of step 8
“In Putty, type ssh root@YOURIPHONEIPADDRESS and press return.
When prompted for the password, again enter alpine and press return.
You will now be SSH’d into the iPhone.
Type cd ../../ and press return.
Type sh install.sh and press return.”
nothing shows up when i type, i’m not sure if it is supposed to or not…but i type in alpine and hit enter and get a message saying access denied.
pretty much the same problem that elromeo180 is having. If anyone has any solutions to the problem please let me know!
Thanks

Hmm. Every time that I put my iPhone in recovery mode, the screen goes black and I restore to the downloaded file. I get the error and then press “ok”, but I try and download it again and get the same error (1015). When that happens, my iPhone goes to the itunes plug-in screen (the one without the “slide for emergency” option). I have gone over the steps repeatedly and restored my iphone in the way directed to do so, but the iPhone seems to go into the “wrong recovery mode” with the plug-in to itunes screen.
What should I do? or What am I doing wrong?
Anyone got any ideas??

in putty, instead of typing root@youripaddress, just type in your ip address. when putty opens and asks for user name type in root then it will ask for password then type in alpine and it should open. This worked for me after I had the same problem as you.

this is the best and most clear guide i’ve seen for an 1.1.3 upgrade except for one thing…
The last most important step of –phone activation–….
the chmod/lockdown instructions. are just too vague.
in Terminal, do you ssh into the iphone 1st? After you’ve typed chmod +x?
Could someone who successfully activated PLEASE give an EXACT, step by literal step, example of how to do it?

I have a question, I get to step 6, tap the “Install AppSnapp” in safari, my screen goes back to the activate screen just like this guide says it will, but after that… nothing. And even though I changed the auto lock to Never, the screen goes black after a minute or so. I know the guide says to touch nothing on the phone at this point, so after I turned my phone on and off a few times and tried this again I lfet my phone sitting all night just incase installer was taking a very long time to install and I was just being impatient. …nothing. Eventually I just had to put my phone back into recovery mode, restore and upgrade so I could have a working phone for today…. had anyone else had this problem of AppSnapp not installing when you click on the “Install AppSnapp” button when you’re at Jailbreakme.com? Did I screw something up at the *#307# part? I definitely followed the instructions to a T more than a few times…

2 Major Issues:
First the email info@iphoneatlas.com doesn’t work. The message returns:
The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:
‘info@iphoneatlas.com.’ on 2/4/2008 8:34 PM
Invalid recipient
Second, within Step 6 the instructions call for:
“Scroll up and tap “Wi-Fi.” Select your network and enter a password if necessary.”
However, the iPhone will not accept the password and when I try to connect to unsecured networks, I get the same error that it is unable to join. Because of this, it is impossible to connect to http://www.jailbreakme.com to do the app installer.
This leaves me with no place to go but back to an unbroken 1.1.3. Any suggestions???

I installed the update to 1.1.3 and everything worked fine… But the phone never rebooted… So after about an hour and did it myself. The phone booted up to the CD/Music screen and I fired up Iphuc and used the command “cmd fsboot” and the phone booted fine. I got back into iTunes and synced everything and installed a lot of 3rd party aps and themes and the mail works great the voicemail works… seems to be everything working like a charm with one ONE ONE catch.. Every time I have to fully reboot the phone it hangs on that CD/Music screen and I have to use iphuc with the cmd fsboot to get it to boot up but if I just tap the off button on top it comes right back up no problem. Only a hard reboot has to have the computer to finish.. It is great if I don’t get stuck somewhere.. what can I do.. please help

This worked brilliantly. Thank you. I recently had to replace my original (jailbreaked) iPhone because I loaned it to a colleague, who dropped and dented it. He bought me a new one, which came with 1.1.2. I tried following someone else’s instructions for hacking it, but ending up upgrading to 1.1.3 when it didn’t work. I thought I was stuck with 1.1.3. But I followed these instructions, and now I am at 1.1.3 with everything (google location finder, youtube, phone, etc.) working beautifully, plus all the third party apps that I used to have. Excellent work on these instructions.

Here’s my situation : I’ve got an iPhone 1.1.3, which was 1.1.2 when I got it out the box. I then updated both the firmware and iTunes. Which leaves me with iPhone 1.1.3 and iTunes 7.6. Can someone tell me if there’s any reason for me not to go and jailbreak it ?
I mean : is there a risk of losing phone functionalities ? is there a reason for iNdependence to refuse to get the iPhone out of recovery mode ? anything else ?
Thank you very much.

Ok guys its me and I thought I would try to answer some questions and hope someone answers mine:
Raffster: make sure you hit the refresh sources button first. The knewest version should work great.
Iplassart: well you might lose phone functionality, but if you use the new official jailbreak, and answer no to all the questions (you can do this instead of step 8) then it should work fine).
Good luck

Just bought the iPhone and got bored with it within a week so decided to Jailbreak with this write-up and did the entire Jailbreak with 1.1.3 with no issues. If iTunes does not recognize your phone during the process, simply cycle your phone off and back on and continue on. As far as iTunes not displaying your phone, simply left click on the name and rename your iPhone.
