A better iPhone 1.1.2 jailbreak (for both Mac and Windows, simpler)

Posted 3 December 2007 @ 5pm in Guides/How-Tos

Thanks to the work of the iPhone Dev team, jailbreaking iPhone firmware/software 1.1.2 is now a uniform, platform-agnostic process that doesn’t require the use of any third-party utilities other than what is included in a single download package from Conceited Software.

The process, while somewhat easier than the previously described jailbreak, is still somewhat complicated and fraught with potential problems. We still recommend sticking with version 1.1.1 if you’d like to use third-party applications on your iPhone (since the jailbreak process there is one-step). However, if you’ve already updated to 1.1.2, there’s not an easy way to go back to version 1.1.1 an keep your phone active for voice services.

If you have problems with this version of the jailbreak and are running Mac OS X, you can use our old guide.

You will need an active WiFi connection for your iPhone to perform this procedure.

  1. Download the iPhone 1.1.1 firmware/software package, and after it is downloaded, make sure it still has the extension .ipsw and not .zip. Rename it if necessary (the correct name is iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw).
  2. Launch iTunes if it isn’t open.

  3. Put iPhone in recovery mode (hold the sleep and home [on the top of the iPhone] buttons simultaneously until the screen goes blank, then release the sleep button but keep holding the home button until you receive a message in iTunes stating “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode”
  4. Do not restore the iPhone at this point
  5. In iTunes, select your iPhone from the left-hand pane (source list) and click the “Summary” tab. Hold down the option key, then click “Restore.” Select the 1.1.1 package you just downloaded. You’ll receive the error message “1015″ indicating a failure to restore — this is normal.
  6. Download the iTunes 1.1.2 jailbreak folder from Conceited Software.
  7. If you are using a Mac, double-click jailbreak.jar in the file you just downloaded. If you are on a Windows system, double-click the file windows.bat. Click the “Boot from Recovery” button. This should force the iPhone out of recovery mode.
  8. This process can take several minutes or can be instant. In some cases, the phone will automatically reboot and go to the “Activate iPhone” screen. In other cases, the progress bar never finishes, but the proper process occurs, and the iPhone screen goes completely black with the device powering off. At this point, you might need to hold down the power button for several seconds until the device restarts. If 10 or minutes have gone by and nothing has happened (the recovery mode screen, with an iTunes icon and a USB cable, is still displayed on your iPhone), try disconnecting your iPhone and reconnecting it and trying again, or restart your computer and trying again.
  9. Launch iTunes if it is not open. You will no see the “Waiting for Activation” screen, but your iPhone won’t activate.
  10. Slide to unlock your iPhone, and launch Safari.
  11. Navigate to www.jailbreakme.com.
  12. Go to the bottom of the page and tap “Install AppSnapp.”
  13. You will see the “Downloading Programs” message and a spinning progress indicator.
  14. At the end of the process, your iPhone will be jailbroken under firmware version 1.1.1, but you won’t have access to voice services yet.
  15. Slide to unlock your iPhone. You will see the “Installer” icon on your home screen. Tap it.
  16. Tap “Install” at the bottom of the screen, then tap “Tweaks 1.1.1″
  17. Scroll down to a package called “OktoPrep” and tap it, then tap the “Install” button in the upper-right corner.
  18. In iTunes, select your iPhone from the source lift on the left-hand side. If it prompts you to restore your iPhone from backup, you can do so (by pressing the “Continue” button), after which your iPhone will reboot and again try (and fail) to activate.
  19. With your iPhone selected on the left-hand pane, click the “Summary” button a the top of the window. You will see a message stating “A newer version of the iPhone software is available (1.1.2). […]” Click the Update button (not Restore). Your iPhone should receive the 1.1.2 update, and eventually activate in iTunes.
  20. [At the end of the process, you might see an error message indicating that the iPhone could not be restored because of an “Error 1602″ or similar. If so, follow the instructions in this Knowledge Base article to re-install iTunes. You then, unfortunately, have to start the process all over again.]
  21. After the installation of firmware 1.1.2, Installer will vanish from your iPhone — this is normal.
  22. Go back to the folder you downloaded from Conceited Software and again run the jailbreak.jar file on a Mac or the windows.bat file on a Windows system. This time, check the “Install SSH option” then press the “Jailbreak” button. This process takes several minutes — do not perform any other operations on your iPhone during this process.

  23. Your iPhone will reboot several times. Don’t press any buttons on the device until the When you’re done, the Installer application should now be on your screen and the iPhone should properly activate. Consult our Applications page for information on using Installer.

if you click the file windows.bat. and it doesn’t do any thing. check whether you have Java install on your computer.

has anyone try this step out, does it work?

it doesn’t seem to have the “dial” “call” “hold” step so i’m not sure how it manage to access the jailbreak.com page through the safari.

I’m another person whose iPhone came with 1.1.2, and this doesn’t work for me. I also tried the “foolproof” method on the other page, and it also doesn’t work.

I’ve gotten as far as getting wireless access, and getting to the jailbreakme.com website, but when I try to download the app it cuts it off and goes back to the “activate phone” screen. Seems like someone got wise to that trick.

I’ve also seemingly downloaded every app on the planet, and spend hours on this crap. Nothing works. Please help.

Good work chaps, it works! A couple of tweaks to this page: (i) if you are in Windows, you don’t have an ‘option’ button - use ’shift’ instead; (ii) make sure you have Java installed prior to running the installer; (iii) make sure your Wifi is all up and running; then you’re good to go; (iv) last paragraph needs some work also.

to those of you that have a problem with the tunes 1.1.2 jailbreak process in Windows, I recommend to go to the Windows.BAT file, and right click it, then Extract to desktop, (if you are running the Win-zip) just click “Extract to here” and it should create an extension Icon on your desktop, click it, and from there it’s a smooth ride to unlock.
on this note, allow me to thank all the good people that made it possible.

Jinumoon, I had the same issue go to java.com and download free java. Then the Java.BAT (Windows.BAT) file will work.
