1.1.2 firmware hits, fixes TIFF vulnerability and easy jailbreaks

Posted 8 November 2007 @ 9pm in News

Well, looks like tomorrow has come sooner than we thought. In tune with the European time difference, Apple has released firmware version 1.1.2 for the iPhone. While not showing up as an update in iTunes just yet, you can download the 160MB file here and do a manual update via iTunes’ firmware updater. Just ctrl or option click on the restore button then direct it towards the zip file and iTunes will do the rest.
Like reported earlier, the update kills off the handy .TIFF exploit in Safari that had given users root access to the device. Engadget is also reporting that as a result of this, JailbreakMe.com no longer works (duh).

The rest of the updates are somewhat insignificant feature-wise, besides the additional languages and an update to the modem’s firmware leaving it at 04.02.13_G.

If you’re not keen on doing the manual install, the option to update should automatically appear in iTunes tomorrow the next time you plug your phone in.

Hm. I didn’t get a zip file. It’s a folder called iPhone1,1_1 (no indication of a “2″ anywhere), containing a bunch of other files, including 3 dmg files requiring passwords to open. So I think I’ll wait.

where did it go? It’s Saturday morning Nov 10 and iTunes says 1.1.1 is the latest version

Completed install by manually downloading the 1.1.2 zip file. By Option-clicking on the iTunes (7.5) Restore button, pointed toward the zip file on my desktop. After Choosing the zip install, iTunes completed the restore & install. While I’m not using any 3d party iPhone apps, all my prior settings etc were maintained. iPhone working well.

Seems like iTunes 7.5 has a check in it. It now tells me there is a problem and I need to restore the phone. The phone is jailbroken and has Installer installed along with other non-sanctioned apps. So it appears that now iTunes is checking for jailbroken iphones and will not do any sync or updates.

PS: I am running V 1.1.1 (3A109a) and the only tab that shows on iTunes is the Summary tab and my only option now is to “Restore”

several days later - and still does not say that 1.1.2 is available. Is this not meant for the masses yet?

Well, the Jailbreak process for me did not go as well as planned. I have documented the HUGE amounts of steps I followed to try to fix but I’m now left with an un-jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhone.

I think the jury is still out there on this one. I believe the README.TXT included with the jailbreaker needs to be refined a bit.

Anyway, good luck to others. My post is here: http://tinyurl.com/ywj7jb
