iPhone 1.1.2 firmware update coming soon; will likely close TIFF exploit

iPhones sold for use on the O2 network in the UK — starting November 9th — are reportedly already running software/firmware version 1.1.2, according to T3, which got its hands on an review unit (see the image below, which displays firmware 1.1.2). The publication claims update 1.1.2 sports the following enhancements:

• “more keyboard character sets [...] full support for French and German, with special keyboard lay-outs on the ready to tackle accented characters.”
• “addresses security issues and minor bugs”

This update will likely close a TIFF image-based security flaw that allows the AppSnapp routine, an extremely method for opening the iPhone filesystem and installing third-party applications, to operate. It’s unclear whether unofficial third-party applications on iPhones will be erased by the 1.1.2 update, but it’s safe to say that AppSnapp will no longer be able to jailbreak iPhones and push Installer.app automatically after this update.

If you desire retention of currently installed unofficial third-party apps, you should hold off on installing iPhone software/firmware update 1.1.2 until early adopter reports materialize.
