Possibly the best iPhone Web app yet: vtap trumps built-in iPhone YouTube app

Posted 2 November 2007 @ 11am in Web apps, News

It’s a bold statement to be sure, but we think we’ve found the coolest Web app yet for the iPhone. Dubbed “vtap,” the service lets you search for videos from around the Internet, then — get this — encodes them on the fly and puts them in a format that can be played on the iPhone (H.264). vtap searches YouTube, MySpace, Dailymotion, news sites like the Associated Press and Reuters, even ESPN. (Think SeeqPod but for videos)

In other words, it’s not constrained by the lack of Flash, Windows Media Player, etc. support on the iPhone. Virtually any video that can be found on the Web can now be played in the iPhone’s native QuickTime player thanks to on-the-fly encoding.

The interface is slick and fast, and there are some great touches. For instance, while the service is encoding a video on the fly, vtap will show you an RSS feed of recent news to keep you entertained. Because of its breadth and functionality, this Web-based app puts Apple’s native YouTube iPhone application to shame.

Navigate to http://www.vtap.com on your iPhone to give it a shot. You might just agree with our assessment.

vtap really is awesome. It kicks the Apple’s Built in YouTube player in the @ss.
I dont think we can say its the best WebApp, but it definitely is better than the current YouTube options, and there are way more videos available on this.

Amen. A Salute to the jesus phone. it is the best app that completely smokes youtube app. But no one ever answers important questions like “can you sync the vids back to your mac.” or “can you put them on a ipod” (for those fanatics of the ipod classic). I mean for this salute to the jesus phone should at least be able to be compatible with the god computer… IMAC

vTap is by far the most useful webapp out there. I’ve never seen it mentioned on Apple’s web site either. It’s great you can add videos to your playlist and it will re-encode them and you can play them one after another. Much better than the YouTube app and you get high quality video from sources like ESPN, AP, etc… not as grainy as YouTube that is for sure. If you have an iPhone you must bookmark this web app. When you click on tools there is also a vTap wikipedia search field, very useful as well.
