How to setup up IMAP Gmail on your iPhone (video)
Posted 24 October 2007 @ 11am in Guides/How-Tos
Google recently added IMAP support to its Gmail email service, a major boon for iPhone users since it allows changes made by the user to be reflected on the server, won’t put both sent messages in your inbox and more. In addition to text-based step-by-step instructions, Google has now posted a video demonstrating how to setup IMAP Gmail on the iPhone. The process is pretty simple: Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings through a Web browser, then create a new “Other” mail account in your iPhone’s mail settings (the “Gmail” icon for creating new accounts doesn’t yet work with IMAP). The video is displayed below, but you won’t be able to view it on an iPhone due to the lack of Flash support.

‘Snot working for me. My tab in ‘Settings’ still says ‘Forwarding and POP’ instead of ‘…and IMAP’. Work for anyone else?

Helpful note: http://mail.google.com/mail/help/about_whatsnew.html
“Don’t fret if you don’t see “IMAP Access” yet under the Settings menu. We’re rolling it out to everyone over the next few days.”
…for now, the wait continues…

IMAP Gmail is now working FLAWLESSLY for me! Hooray! You can organize your messages into any and all of you Gmail Labels (folders on the iPhone) and any change you make is properly reflected in your Gmail account anywhere else you access it! It’s so very great not to have to read messages twice anymore to get them to show up properly as having been read! THANK YOU GMAIL/GOOGLE!!!!

Since December 18th I’ve been unable to send emails on iPhone with Google IMAP feature enabled –(’Outgoing SMPT server failed’)–anyone else had this issue? And a solution?
Apple support does not seem to understand the issue and advised me to delete the IMAP account and configure a new pop GMail account. I had to do that to be able send emails on iPhone, which now works.
However, stubbornly (I want my IMAP feature to work!), I tried reestablishing IMAP (it still will not send) and thus, with two accounts (IMAP and POP) I can view IMAP but not send emails, and send with POP — not a tidy solution.
Thank you.
