AnySIM (free graphical unlock) for 1.1.1 iPhones released; instructions for installing

Posted 16 October 2007 @ 10am in News, Guides/How-Tos

A version of AnySIM that is compatible with iPhones running software/firmware 1.1.1 has been released. In a nutshell, this means that iPhones running the new software release can be unlocked to run on carriers other than AT&T via an iPhone native application with a graphical interface.

A note from the iPhone/iTouch Dev Team reads:

“Please note that this version works only on VIRGIN 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 phones. We are working on a re-virginizer. DO NOT USE IF YOU HAVE ALREADY UNLOCKED WITH ANYSIM 1.0.”

In other words, if you unlocked your iPhone while it was running software/firmware 1.0.2, do not use this version of AnySIM. This release is only for new iPhones that shipped with firmware/software 1.1.1 or iPhones that were upgraded from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 but never unlocked. We’ve received word that a “re-virginizer,” which will allow iPhones that were unlocked under software/firmware 1.1.1 to return to a default state from which they can be unlocked under 1.1.1. There is already an 18-step process that will unbrick iPhones that were unlocked under 1.0.2 then upgraded (and in the process bricked) to 1.1.1.

Instructions for applying this release are as follows:

1. Jailbreak your 1.1.1 iPhone with AppSnapp.

2. Put AnySIM on your iPhone:

  1. Launch Installer on the iPhone
  2. Tap Sources
  3. Tap Edit
  4. Tap Add
  5. Enter http://iphone.blurgle.ca/repo in the url box and hit go. (not having a trailing slash matters)
  6. Installer.app will add the source
  7. Go back to Installer.app, tap “All Packages” and install AnySIM
  8. Run AnySIM and follow the on-screen instructions
  9. Remove your SIM card and put it back in.

In what part of the unlock process should I take out the ATT sim card. Or in that case I should leave it inside?

This is great. Rather than using Terminal, can one just use iNdependence to upload AnySim to the Applications folder on the iPhone? Would this work?

OK… so they have released the 1.1.1 unlock. Now I am very tempted to do it. But I am kind of sort of scare to do it. I really like the idea but just because of moral/fan standards: I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED APPLE (since 1987) because of their FREEDOM and OPEN TO EVERYBODY kind of statement and I really find shady and contradictory that they have locked us up with AT&T. Which brings me to the question of: DID THEY CHECK ON AT&T WORK WITH THE NETWORK BEFORE SIGNING THE CONTRACT WITH THEM? AT&T Service REALLY REALLY SUCKS A**.

Now about the UNLOCK. I am a newbie on this whole thing of installing and jailbraking and all that and this post have opened a couple more of questions about the whole process: (CALL ME STUPID… yes I am but I can’t help it about this thing) Does the new AnySIM require to DOWNGRADE the firmware to 1.0.2? (my iphone is a “virgen” 1.1.1 iphone activated with AT&T) or I can run it on my 1.1.1 iphone? Is there somebody Out there that can describe the steps a little more in detail? I do not know how to Jailbrake the phone. What should I do first? Activate the phone with INdependence? then? what? Jailbrake it? buuuaaaaaa! somebody can help?

Thanks

There is one thing that I don’t understand.
To jailbreak my brand new 1.1.1 iPhone (no activacted yet) using iNdependence, I’ve to downgrade it to 1.0.2 or can I jailbreak leaving the 1.1.1?

In the iNdependence help file, there is instruction to donwgrade to 1.0.2 to allow application install and than to upgrade to 1.1.1.
But this procedure dosen’t block the unlocking procedure with anySIM 1.1???

Any help is appreciated :-)

Everything works great until the last passage. When I input the command in the Terminal (and I’m quite sure I type everything right) it says:

“ssh: connect to host 10.0.1.3 port 22: Connection refused
lost connection”

Anyone’s got any clue why?

Thanks

to artesios, the ssh error can be sorted by enabling ssh with iNdependance. It resets to off after updating firmware to 1.1.1.

I tried these instructions on a 1.0 phone that I had upgraded to 1.1.1 using the iNdependance instructions. It didn’t work and used up some of my available unlock attempts. Does anyone know if I can use iPhoneSimFree on a phone this didn’t work on.
