Undocumented new features in iPhone software/firmware 1.1.1
Posted 27 September 2007 @ 12pm in Uncategorized
There are a few new features in iPhone software/firmware update 1.1.1 that Apple didn’t mention.
- You can now change the sound that is played when a new text message is received. Tap “Settings,” then “Sounds,” then “New Text Message.”
- International characters: In Mail or a text message, you can press and hold certain keys (like C, or N) for a menu of corresponding international characters.
- There is now a “Debug console” for Safari, which shows HTML errors when rendering Web pages. Tap “Settings,” then “Safari,” then “Developer”
- There are new options for Video playback. You can start playing videos where they left off or from the beginning, and you can use closed captioning. Tap “Settings,” then “iPod.”

i had an error -1602 and my friend had an error -6.
didn’t seem serious.
while iphone was still connected, we restarted itunes. iphone went into restore mode and then updated to the latest software/firmware. everything had to be restored from backup. no big deal. just inconvenient.

I had the same problem. I don’t know what the error code was, but I had to restore my iPhone too. It’s now just over halfway finished synching 8GB of videos/music.
FYI: I have never installed any third-party apps, so this happened on a “clean” iPhone.
On the bright side: That new WiFi icon looks niiiiiiiiiiiice!

Oddly, the calculator icon has been slightly changed as well.

The double-click for Favorites is kind of lame when the phone is in sleep mode. Double-clicking brings up the iPod controls if you don’t unlock it with the slider first. So it’s still quite a few steps to get to Favorites if the phone has been sleeping.
Actually, Apple should allow an option to disable the unlock slider. I really don’t see the point of it, since the buttons that turn the phone on require a pretty good press to do so; and even if accidentally turned on, the phone can be set to go back to sleep after a minute in any case.

Another undocumented feature: The calculator icon is different. If anyone cares. :)

I just noticed, that after listening to a podcast or QuickTime movie, I am not asked at the end if I want to delete to make room. It just snaps right back to the listing. Which I guess makes sense, since iTunes always put the material back anyway if I forgot to delete them from iTunes before syncing. But now, it appears, there is no way to delete podcasts and movies from the iPhone directly.

@daniel4510: You can delete any video on your iPhone by swiping to the right (just like in email).
@anyone: I tried using the video out with the iPod AV Connection Kit that I bought three days ago. It no workie ): Anyone successful with video out? Please let me know!
And tell us what hardware you used to get it to work…I really want to use it with the universal dock and remote, but it didn’t work for me )’:

another undocumented feature is in safari: when you rotate to landscape and then tap the button to select a different window, the window selection screen now rotates the pages properly so pages viewed in portrait mode are able to be closed.

Anyone try to restore on an unlocked phone that is using At&t?
I’m wondering what will happen.
No 3rd Party apps installed…just an unlocked phone on At&t service.
What shall i do?!

Not sure I’d call this a feature:
You can no longer lower the ringer volume to zero. Now, even with the ringer set at lowest, and the silent button on, alarms still make noise. There’s no way to put the phone in silent mode except by going into Settings and toggling these noises off. How annoying! They took a step in the wrong direction here. Rather, they should allow you to specify what noises the silent button turns off.
