Tool for backing up your iPhone’s SMS messages debuts

We previously reported that one of the more commonly reported complaints about the iPhone’s SMS scheme is that there’s an artificial limit — 1000 — on the number of text messages that can be stored. In other words, though there may be a significant chunk of free memory on the device, the amount of text messages that can be stored is capped at 1000. This can result in the message “Your SMS mailbox is almost full. Please delete some messages.” There is no built-in method for backing up old SMS messages and creating an archive.
iPhone Atlas reader Vaughn Cordero saw this problem, and started working on a solution. The fruit of his labor is “MobileSyncBrowser,” a Mac OS X tool that allows you to view the backups of SMS text messages (which are automatically created by iTunes) and optionally export them. This way you can delete the messages from your phone while keeping their archived on your computer.
MobileSyncBrowser can also backup notes and call history every time you sync.

Where are the SMS messages, notes, etc actually stored by iTunes on the Mac? Are they encoded, buried in other material,….?
