iPhone firmware 1.1.1 will sport video out, ability to turn off EDGE roaming, more
Posted 18 September 2007 @ 2pm in Uncategorized
A forthcoming firmware/software update for the iPhone — version 1.1.1 — will add video out capabilities and the ability to turn off EDGE roaming. This information is based on screenshots taken by Engadget UK during the unveiling of the iPhone in England, where demonstration units are already running firmware/software revision 1.1.1.
- EDGE Roaming On/Off This shot shows the option to turn off EDGE roaming under the Network pane of Settings. This feature should give users the ability to eliminate the potential for huge international data roaming charges.
- Video out This shot shows new video-out capabilities for the iPhone — options already available on the iPod touch. Users will be able to turn Widescreen on or off, and choose between NTSC and PAL signals.
- Selectable double-click home button actions This shot shows that, as previously reported, the iPhone will gain the ability to perform various actions in response to the home button being clicked twice after the update to firmware/software version 1.1.1. This can be used to bring up iPod controls while the phone is locked (”asleep”), or default to the Home screen, favorite phone contacts, or iPod when the home button is double-clicked.
We previously noted that in addition the WiFi iTunes store, iPhone firmware/software 1.1.1 is expected to add international/multiple keyboard support, bug fixes/stability enhancements, and the possible addition of a Safari debug mode as is sported by the iPod touch

Video out capabilities!
My prayers are answered…with Popcorn 3, I’ll now be able to take shows from TiVo to iPhone to girlfriend’s TV!
Now all I need is some freeware that will allow me to edit .m4v files…does anyone out there know of any?!!!??

That’s great and all, but may I suggest….
That Apple stop worrying about people ripping off ring tones and start concentrating on getting syncing to work? It shouldn’t be this hard. A lot of us have to sync over and over again just to get everything to sync properly. Freezes, stalls, etc., etc. Get syncing to work and then you can concentrate all you want on breaking iToner, iFantastic, etc.. And let third-party developers have access or you will be eating their dust.
This isn’t Mac’s against PC’s anymore. This is cell phones against cell phones and you are way behind right out of the gate. Unless you have something amazing up your sleeves, you will be surpassed in 3 months.

I really hope that there’ll be a lot more to this update than that. How about concentrating on core phone functionalities…like, oh say, voice dialing. Or why stop there - how about activating full bluetooth functionality. I haven’t experienced the previous poster’s problems with syncing so perhaps I shouldn’t complain but it’d sure be nice to be able to sync wirelessly. A2DP would be lovely, also.

What are the chances that this update WON’T allow you to install iPod games on the iPhone?
Connect the dots:
A couple of days ago, Apple announced that the iPod games on iTunes have been modified to work on the new iPods, including iPod Touch.
Apple is releasing a major firmware update for the iPhone, presumably within a week of that announcement.
With iPod Touch and iPhone being so similar, why wouldn’t they sell games to the million iPhone users too?

Just use MPEG StreamClip to edit almost any video file or convert them to another format.

Just wanted to point out that it will work with UN-PROTECTED .m4v files. If you bought them from iTunes they are protected and I don’t think they can be edited. Realized that this might be what you were looking for since most editors including QuickTime Pro can edit an m4v file. (m4v is normally identical to a mp4 file unless its protected)

Thanks, Ray, for the suggestion.
But sadly, it doesn’t work. I was able to edit the unprotected .m4v file, then it saved it as .mp4. I imported it into iTunes, but when I tried to sync, it said that it didn’t transfer the file to the iPhone because it could “not be played” by the iPhone.
Back to square 1.
I know I can do it in Quicktime, but when I save the file, it saves as a .mov file that I then have to convert AGAIN to .m4v. I don’t get that, since it was ALREADY .m4v. So, I’m trying to find a method that will not add another 7-hour conversion to my already arduous process for getting TiVo programs to the iPhone:
1. Transfer from TiVo to Hard Drive (TAKES FOREVER ~2 hours)
2. Convert from .tivo to .m4v in Popcorn 3 (TAKES EVEN LONGER THAN FOREVER ~7 hours)
3. Edit the .m4v file with quicktime or some editor to crop out commercials and excess video (edited file saves as non-m4v, non-iPhone-compatible file! grrr!)
4. Convert from .mov or .mp4 to .m4v (TAKES FOREVER AGAIN ~7 hours)
5. Import into iTunes
That’s about a 16-hour process…any suggestions are welcome.
What kills me is that I can’t beLIEVE that there is no software that will edit an UNprotected .m4v file and just resave it again as .m4v…how hard could it be?!
Ah, the life of the early iPhone adopters!
