iPod touch keyboard trounces iPhone’s: multi-language support, multiple keyboards and more

Posted 13 September 2007 @ 11am in iPod touch, News

The iPod Touch will sport keyboard functionality that is far more robust than the iPhone’s (in its current form) according to an 85-page features guide recently published by Apple.

The iPod touch provides keyboards in 14 different languages, and supports the following keyboard formats:

  • QWERTY
  • QWERTZ
  • AZERTY
  • QZERTY
  • Japanese IME

In addition, the iPod touch provides the ability to make two or more keyboards available simultaneously. If more than one keyboard is turned on you can tap a special icon to switch keyboards while you’re typing. Apple says “When you tap the symbol, the name of the newly active keyboard appears briefly.”

In addition, as pointed out by one of our astute readers, the iPod touch’s keyboard allows you to quickly type a period by double-tapping the spacebar.

The added keyboard functionality may well make its way to the iPhone in the form of a software update.

For a phone that’s only available in the US, why is this newsworthy? It may be an interesting bit of trivia, but it’s not earthshaking news.

Besides, Apple can update the iPhone’s keyboard at any time when necessary.

Not only that:

“may” end up in the iPhone? Anyone want to take bets? I’ve got “later this month when the already announced iPhone update happens”

The double space period thing will be a blessing but i really want user definable shortcuts (TextExpander for iPhone)

I’ll gladly give up a slew of alternative keyboards and double-space tricks, if only CUT/COPY/PASTE would be added into the iPhone!

ditto to jtalarico1… I can’t tell you how many times I instinctively tried to cut/copy/paste and it’s on my wish list too, along with some sort of speaking GPS.

Houston get’s touched. At least two of the Apple stores in Houston - Galleria and Baybrook each recieved a few units. Get’em while they are hot.

The ability to print on my home or office network would be nice too. I have to re- email myself too often, and this morning when I filled out the info for my $100 credit from my iPhone, it would sure have been nice to print it!

Other than that, ditto about copy/paste. I still love this thing!

some japanese support is nice, but …

chinese/korean/hebrew input methods (and for display menus!) would also be appreciated!
