Ringtone confusion: iTunes store not selling them yet, option in place

Posted 6 September 2007 @ 11am in Guides/How-Tos

There appears to be some confusion over the new ringtone purchase capabilities built into iTunes 7.4. In a nutshell, iTunes 7.4 includes the capability to purchase ringtone-enabled tracks from the iTunes Store, edit them and send them to the iPhone; however, ringtone functionality has not yet been added to the iTunes Store.

If you click on the iTunes Store in iTunes 7.4 then navigate to the “View” menu and select “View Options,” you will be presented with the ability to select the columns that are shown next to tracks in the iTunes Store. One of the available options is “Ringtone.” If you check that box, a ringtone column and associated icon will appear next to tracks available from purchase from the iTunes Store. As of yet, however, no tracks appear to be enabled for ringtone purchase.

Apple says the iTunes Store infrastructure should be updated to accommodate ringtone purchases some time in the next several days. An updated version of iTunes will not be required — the changes will come on the server end.

OK, how’s this for confusing - I’ve downloaded and installed iTunes 7.4 on my MBP. I checked to make sure the version of iTunes that was running was indeed 7.4.

Yet, the “view” options do not include ringtones! In fact, if I click on the iTunes Store in iTunes 7.4 then navigate to the “View” menu, I cannot even select “View Options” as it is simply greyed out.

What’s the story with that? Anyone else have the same problem?

I think the frustrating part and the confusing part for many people is that once inside the iTunes Music Store, not your Music Library you can type “Command + J” to bring up the view options for the iTunes Music Store. This will show a new column when browsing songs to purchase that show if the selected song can be used as a ringtone.

Browsing your Music Library of songs you already own and typing “Command + J” for view options does not NOT have checkbox “Ringtone” to allow you to see this same column for your existing music library.

I don’t get how without another update to iTunes 7.4 we are going to be able to see what existing song are eligible for usage + upgrade to a ringtone. And when we do have ringtones that we will have purchased how are we gong to know that this song is also a ringtone with the missing column.

Anyone know how I’m going to be able to show a column from my Library of “Ringtone Column”??
