Will native iPhone applications work on the iPod Touch?

Today Apple unveiled the iPod Touch, a new touchscreen iPod that shares much functionality with the iPhone. Like the iPhone, it runs a scaled down version of Mac OS X, can browse the Web via a version of Safari, can stream videos from YouTube, and includes Contacts, Calendar, Calculator and Clock applications. It can also use the new iTunes WiFi Music Store. It apparently lacks the email client of the iPhone and a number of other significant features, however. The device is expected to ship later this month at a price of $299 for the 8GB model and $399 for the 16GB model.

The new introduction begs the question: will third-party applications written for the iPhone be able to be installed and run on the new iPod Touch? It appears that the same basic software and interface architecture is in place, making this a distinct possibility. In any event, we’ll find out later this month when the units ship.
