Fixing iPhone email account issues: Delete then re-establish

Email accounts stored on the iPhone can exhibit a number of strange issues including:
- Refusal to accept incoming mail
- Problems retrieving new mail, with the “Last updated” status message showing an old time
- etc.
In many cases, the fix for these issues is drop-dead simple: delete and re-establish the afflicted account. Tap Settings and then tap Mail. Tap on the problematic acount, then scroll to the bottom and select Delete Account. Go back to the main Mail settings pane and tap Add Account to re-create the account, re-entering your settings. Note that you’ll lose any mail downloaded to the iPhone from non-mirrored POP accounts.
We’re not sure why exactly mail accounts start exhibiting these issues, or why deleting then re-establishing them alleviates the problems.

I’m not sure if what I’m experiencing falls into this category, but I seem to get a lot of emails that show “This message has no content” or (and this happens with over 50% of my emails) the summary will give me the first few lines and when I click on the email, I get a message stating “This message has not been downloaded from the server”. Very frustrating!

When I try to send mail from a working acct on my iPhone, it often says my server has rejected this email and the iPhone puts it in my draft folder. Then later (and usually when I’ve moved to another location) it goes through. What’s with that? My incoming mail comes to me just fine in these situations.

Solving the “this message has not been downloaded from the server” problem:
Switch to IMAP on the iPhone to solve this problem. Using Gmail as an example, do not create a default POP Gmail account on the iPhone, start out creating an “other” type of email account to get to the IMAP option.
