iPhone KB articles: Not recognized by Mac OS X, Windows; photo transfer fixes; removing SIM card; using VPN; Fixing mail sending issues; much more

Apple has posted a slew of Knowledge Base articles for the iPhone, covering issues ranging from use of third-party iPod accessories to resolving issues with WiFi connectivity. Among them:
- Not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
- Not recognized in iTunes for Windows
- About iPhone and iPod Accessories: Not all iPod accessories are fully compatible with iPhone yet. This is because cell phones can cause audio interference with some accessories that have the ‘Made for iPod’ label. [Ed.- The interference can sometimes be obviated by putting the iPhone in Airplane Mode (from the Settings pane). However, this is not always effective. A set of iRhythms speakers, for instance, played music from the iPhone but was plagued by interference even with the device in Airplane mode.]
- Transferring information from another phone This article contains Mac OS X and Windows XP/Vista instructions for using PIM apps to transfer data from your old pohone to your computer, to the iPhone. “iPhone does not support reading from or writing to the SIM. Use iTunes to sync information with iPhone.”
- What to do if iPhone won’t transfer photos to your computer The iPhone will transfer photos to your computer if a passcode is enabled. “On iPhone, choose General > Passcode Lock and tap Turn Passcode Off.”
- Removing SIM card prior to iPhone repair Instructions on removing the SIM card with a paperclip, which must be done before sending the unit in for repair. “iPhone is designed to work with most AT&T SIM cards. Other SIM cards may not work. For best results, use the SIM card included with iPhone.”
- Updating and restoring iPhone software “To restore previous iPhone settings: Connect the iPhone to the computer you normally sync with. In iTunes, select the Summary tab and click Restore (this erases all data on iPhone). When prompted, select the option to restore your settings.” This article also contains information on deleting backups.
- iPhone and third-party headphones “Some third-party headphones will not fit into the headphone jack on iPhone.”
- Tips when using Wi-Fi Potential fixes for problems connecting to WiFi hotspots. Particularly, if you are having trouble connecting “Tap Settings > Wi-Fi Networks, then pick the network. In the DHCP panel, select the Renew Lease button.”
- Using an iPhone on an Airplane What happens to device functionality in Airplane mode.
- How to clean iPhone “Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean iPhone.”
- Syncing iPhone with your computer “You can sync contacts from Mac OS X Address Book or Entourage on a Mac, or Yahoo! Addresses Book, Windows Address Book (Outlook Express), or Microsoft Outlook on a PC.”
- Supported protocols for VPN The iPhone supports PPTP + MSCHAPv2 and L2TP/IPSec with SharedSecret + MSCHAPv2 only. (See also this article on setting up VPN)
- Send mail not working If your ISP is blocking port 25, you may see a message that email couldn’t be delivered because the connection to the server on port 25 timed out. Potential fixes for this issue are in this article.
- Frozen and unresponsive Force quit or reset in this case.
- About SMS text messages The iPhone does not support sending or receiving MMS (Multimedia Message Service) messages, but you can send or receive photos as attachments in email. This article also contains troubleshooting tips for when text messages will not send.
- Connecting to the Internet with EDGE or Wi-Fi “When iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar at the top of the screen. […] You can tell iPhone is connected to the Internet over EDGE if you see in the status bar at the top of the screen.”
- Using Visual Voicemail Visual voicemail may not work properly with a different SIM card.
- IMAP Mail folders are not visible You may need to specify an IMAP path prefix.
- iPhone may get warm when charging “it is normal for iPhone to get warm”
